Scorpions aim to recover sting against Barbados Pride

first_imgNew captain John Campbell is hoping for a change in fortunes when the Jamaica Scorpions meet title-hopefuls Barbados Pride in the eighth round of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Professional League at Sabina Park, beginning today. Parachuted into the leadership position last weekend following the axing of fellow opener, Paul Palmer Jr, Campbell lost his opening game in charge to Trinidad and Tobago Red Force by eight wickets. This followed another below average batting display by the Scorpions, who made 225 in their first innings and 155 in their second. “I would have loved to have started off with a win, but it didn’t happen,” said Campbell. “However, I have to try and put that behind me. We have three games left, and I am definitely looking forward to winning these three games.” Set for a 10 a.m. start, third-place Jamaica, on 60 points, will enter the contest with three wins, four defeats and a mere mathematical chance of winning the title. This is in comparison to Barbados, who with four wins, two draws and a defeat, are second on 90 points, 17 off league leaders and title favourites Guyana Jaguars, with three rounds of matches to go. “We are not playing the best cricket at the moment, but I think we will get there,” stated Campbell, one of several batsmen in the team who is yet to score a century in 14 first class innings. Middle-order batsman Andre McCarthy, with a ton in the fourth round, is the only player to pass triple figures. “We definitely do have the talent inside the dressing room, but talent is not all; production is it. “It’s kind of hard to be positive when you’re not getting any runs, or you’re trying to survive. But we need to believe in ourselves some more,” Campbell stated. “We are playing for Jamaica, so we are good enough, and as such, need to look into ourselves. The Scorpions will enter the contest with three changes to their 13-man squad. This is after the Wavell Hinds-led selection panel dropped West Indies fast bowler, Sheldon Cottrell and young fast bowler Marquino Mindley; and left out Test batsman Jermaine Blackwood. According to the Jamaica Cricket Association, the latter has not fully recovered from an injury sustained against the Red Force. Replacing the trio are young batsman Brandon King, who was dropped after the team’s first two matches; Guyanese-born opener Trevon Griffith; and left-arm seamer Gavon Brown. Barbados, in the meantime, have brought their strongest available team, which includes West Indies opener Kraigg Brathwaite. The other West Indies players in the 13 are batsmen Jonathan Carter and Kyle Hope and Omar Phillips, wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich and left-arm spinner, Jomel Warrican. Exciting fast bowler, Miguel Cummins, who was drafted for West Indies recent tour of Australia but did not play, is also in the Barbados squad. FOUR WINSlast_img read more

August 5: Queen’s College started and Burnham died in the same month and…

first_imgDear Editor,Reading does enlighten us about a great lot, and I was just recently perusing a British Guiana Queen’s College Magazine dated 1944-45, and it just dawned on me that the institution will be celebrating 174 years of existence on August 5, 2018. It’s the same institution that the late President L.F.S Burnham attended, and he died on August 5, 1985.What a coincidence of August 5?August 5, 1844: the institution opened its doors at the Colony House with 15 pupils enrolled, and the original name was ‘Queen’s College Grammar School.’Rev. W. Hamilton and Rev. Webber were the tutors employed during the opening stages; and in 1845, the institution moved to Main Street with 33 pupils on roll.August 14, 1848: it was incorporated; September 1854, it was moved to Carmichael Street; and in 1876, the new name was given as ‘Queen’s College.’Easter 1918: the institution was moved to the old orphanage in Brickdam, and the school library was started. In 1937, Thomas Lands location was presented to Queen’s College.Where was Colony House?Where in Main Street was Queen’s College once housed?Where in Carmichael Street was the institution once located?Where in Brickdam was the old orphanage? The above data was extracted from the magazine in question, which I have attached for your respective readership’s viewing. Anyone is welcome to make any correction from the above.Yours faithfully,T .PembertonTour Guide/Photographerlast_img read more

GOLF NEWS: P.J. NEE LEADS THE WAY WITH FINE PERFORMANCE AT BARNHILL

first_imgLetterkenny Golf News: Saturday 18th Open competition at Barnhill was sponsored by Mc Auley Roofing and, with a large field entered, it was good to see a club competition stalwart P.J. Nee [12] leading the way home with a modest score of 39pts. Despite the mishap of a “blank” at 2nd, P.J’s birdie at 11th helped him to a two over par gross back nine and 22pts, enough to relegate club house convenor Enda Mannion [13] to runner-up spot on B.O.T. With Enda taking the turn on 20pts and recording a birdie at 12th he was hot favourite to take top spot but an ugly double bogey at 15th scuttled his chances. Monday 20th Cat 4 members were out in force once again and, competing over 11 holes, it was Pluincead O’ Fearraigh who took the honours with a brilliant 24pts. In second place was Garvin Mc Gahey on 20pts.How satisfying it is lately to see Gerry O’ Sullivan’s Cat 4 brigade scoring in the high 30’s, playing par handicap golf, and none more so than Wednesday 22nd Open, when the top placings went to three competition regulars with Damien Redmond [27] taking top spot. With steady drives and good putting, Damien managed an impressive 41pts, with his only blemishes being at 11th and 17th. Another competition regular Ciaran Clerkin [22], coming a close second on 40pts with the help of a great birdie at 18th giving him the nod on a four-way B.O.T, relegating Hugo Daly [22] to third place. Well done Cat 4! Gross prizewinner on the day was Kevin Rafferty [7] with 32 gross pts. Saturday 26th had the club hosting the most favourable of charity classics, Relay for Life. Liam Moriarty [28] with his only blemish being a “blank” at 6th, played his way to top spot with a great inward nine of 22pts and an overall return of 41pts to pip the competition sponsor himself, David Moore [19] who’s great birdie finish at 18th would have saw him in pole position only for that double bogey at 11th on countback. In third place was the steady Ciaran Williamson [14] followed by Henry Mc Cahey [12] and Wednesday’s open winner,Damien Redmond [26]. Best gross on the day went to Mr. Reliable, Joe Coyle [6] who, with a level par front nine, recorded 34 gross points.Once again the club is hosting a Bank Holiday “Weekend of Golf” beginning on Friday 1st May with a Singles Stableford, Saturday 2nd Open is kindly sponsored by Crumlish Appliances, Sunday 3rd Open Stableford and Bank Holiday Monday, Open Stableford. COMMUNITY’S ANGER AS RETENTION GRANTED FOR CONTROVERSIAL BEACH CENTRE

first_imgThe community at Aghadachor in Carrigart has reacted with anger to confirmation that Donegal County Council has granted retention permission for a basement at the nearby beach activity centre. The residents became aware of the decision last Friday and Tony McCarry, Chairman of the Action Group said they had been predicting this outcome for several months. He said they felt their concerns had not been addressed in any serious manner in the first instance by many of those with whom they tried to engage on the matter over these past six months.“In the circumstances none of us involved in the campaign are surprised but we will now have to look at where we go next. The fact that the Council has granted permission for the basement does not mean the battle is over… far from it,” he added.Cllr. Ian McGarvey who has played a leading role in the campaign since last September said he is dismayed by the decision of the council’s planning department. He said he had only returned from the USA at the weekend and he was shocked to be told by ‘a third party’ of the decision. He said he was seeking further clarification from the Council. However he did acknowledge that the only real course of action was an appeal to An Bord Pleanala which he was actively encouraging. The residents are meeting later this week to consider their legal options and the possibility of appealing the decsion to An Bord Pleanalla. In a statement to the Tirconaill Tribune the Aghadachor group said: “T&G Properties have received permission to retain the unplanned basement of the Beach Activity Centre presently nearing completion at Aghadachor. The building commenced some eighteen months ago with plans which did not contain any basement. Only within the past few months did Donegal County Council Planning Department discover that a substantial basement has been built into the foundation of the building.“An enforcement order was placed on the building by the council planning department resulting in a retention application by the developer. There were fifteen local objections to the planning retention application! The basement contains electrical, plumbing and storage facilities – all within a few metres of the beach high water mark. Planning permission was granted on 21st March.“There is a further enforcement order in place for the removal of a grossly unsightly geo-tube running along the inner beach. At high tide the geo-tube did not prevent a tidal overflow.“Presumably the beach has not required tidal prevention for the past hundreds of years. Shades of King Canute attempting to prevent the tide from rising and falling. A retention decision is awaited from Donegal County Council. “A planning application for a golf driving range on the Aghadachor site has been refused on the basis of public safety.“The Right of Way for all local people who use the beach at Aghadachor continues to be problematic. Residents within the compound have very limited access and are required to escort their visitors to and from their homes.“Access for emergency vehicles would appear to have been overlooked – despite the statutory requirement of the Council to protect and facilitate Rights of Way within a locked up compound!Mayor McGarvey and Councillor MrBrearty have undertaken investigative consultations with Donegal County Council,” concluded the statement. ID in the News

first_imgPBS aired a segment on the anti-Darwinism controversy in the schools Monday (see PBS transcript).  Ken Ham and Stephen Meyer presented arguments for criticizing Darwin, while Eugenie Scott and others defended exclusive evolutionary teaching.  The Discovery Institute blog Evolution News analyzed the 14:32 minute segment, complaining that 90 minutes of Meyer’s interview received only 30 seconds of air time.  The segment, narrated by Jeffrey Brown, included some clips from the ID film Unlocking the Mystery of Life. The media continue to slant this controversy according to the “alt-ctrl-Scopes” macro, Rob Crowther of EvolutionNews writes.  But no one can deny that the debate is getting more and more attention.  Sooner or later, the Darwinists, instead of just assuming their belief that humans had bacteria ancestors, will have to actually come up with some evidence for it.(Visited 10 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more
