Alphonso Davies’s Bayern shirt number revealed

first_imgBayern Munich have confirmed that Alphonso Davies will wear the No.19 shirt for the Bundesliga giants following his move from Vancouver Whitecaps. The 18-year-old is considered one of the brightest talents in football, with Bayern having agreed to sign him back in July 2018 for $13.5 million (€11.5m/£10m) – the highest fee ever paid for a Major League Soccer player.Davies was allowed to finish the MLS season with Vancouver – who ended the campaign in eighth in the Western Conference, with the Canadian teenager scoring twice in his final game against Portland Timbers. Sevilla hold talks over Morata loan deal

first_imgSevilla have held preliminary talks with the agent of Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata as they look to sign the Spain international on loan until the end of the season.Goal  understands that Morata’s representative, Juanma Lopez, met with the Liga club recently in a bid to earn his client a move back to his homeland.Sevilla are willing to pay the entirety of Morata’s £140,000-a-week wages to bring him to Andalusia as they aim to continue their unlikely title bid. Pablo Machin’s side currently sit third in the Liga table, seven points behind leaders Barcelona, and remain in contention to win a fourth Europa League title in six seasons.Chelsea are unwilling to let him leave Stamford Bridge unless they can secure a replacement themselves during the January window.Morata signed for the Blues from Real Madrid in a deal worth an initial £58 million in the summer of 2017, but the 25-year-old has struggled for consistency in front of goal.In total he has scored 24 goals in 72 appearances for the west London outfit – nine of those goals coming this season – with his place in Maurizio Sarri’s side far from assured.Eden Hazard has been prefered to him in recent weeks as Sarri introduced a false nine into his formation while Olivier Giroud has also provided competition for Morata over the last 12 months.Morata Fabregas ChelseaAnd his lack of celebration after scoring two goals against Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup on Saturday has seen some suggest he would rather be anywhere else than Chelsea.”I don’t know [if he is happy],” Sarri said on Tuesday ahead of his side’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Tottenham. “I hope so but I don’t know.”It is more important to score than celebrate. He scored two goals in the last match, in the season he has nine.”In his best season at Madrid he scored 20 goals, so he will be able to have a very good second part of the season and he will try to reach his best.”Quite where Morata would fit into the pecking order at Sevilla is unknown, with Wissam Ben Yedder and Andre Silva having netted 24 goals between them in all competitions this season. The latter’s form, however, has dropped off in recent weeks after a fast start following his loan arrival from AC Milan, and with Luis Muriel having left for Fiorentina already in the winter window, Morata could yet earn a starting berth should he move to the Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.Chelsea’s search for a replacement will not see them resurrect their interest in Milan’s Gonzalo Higuain, with the Blues deciding against pursuing the deal after it was deemed too complicated by the club’s hierarchy.Bournemouth’s top scorer Callum Wilson is an option , though the Cherries are understood to be standing firm in not selling the England international. And with more than three weeks of the window still left and a number of possibilities still to emerge, Morata could yet be made to wait before finding out his fate over the next month.Additional reporting by Paco Rico and Romeo Agresti.last_img read more

Wartsila Unveils An Oceanic Awakening Initiative at SMM

Groundbreaking held for Brocks expanded Zone Fitness Centre

As shovels hit the ground Wednesday, the next chapter officially began for Brock University’s expanded fitness centre. The Brock community came together April 24 to mark the groundbreaking of the Zone Fitness Centre project that will see the popular campus facility triple in size. The fitness centre will shed the title as the smallest at any Ontario university when its footprint is increased to 15,500 square feet from 4,300 square feet.Gary Comerford, Chair of Brock’s Board of Trustees, Karen McAllister-Kenny, Brock’s Director of Recreation Services, Aidan Hibma, outgoing President of the Brock University Students’ Union, Brock student and current Zone user Paige Phillips and Brock President Gervan Fearon break ground at the Zone Fitness Centre expansion on Wednesday, April 24.Consistently busy from morning to night, the Zone is often at capacity, requiring students to wait for their chance to exercise, said Karen McAllister-Kenny, Brock’s Director of Recreation Services. She said the present facility opened in 2002, when the University had less than half of its current 19,000 enrolment.“With the growth in student numbers and increased awareness of the importance of physical activity for both physical and mental health, expanding the Zone has become a crucial project for the entire Brock community,” she said.Students voted last year to give the project, and its initial $6.8-million price tag, the green light. It will be funded through a $17-per-credit fee for all full- and part-time undergraduate students over a period of five years, starting in September 2020, when the expansion is completed.“It is amazing to see what students are capable of when they’re afforded an opportunity to leave their community in a better state than what they initially found it in,” said Aidan Hibma, outgoing President of the Brock University Students’ Union (BUSU). “We are excited for what the future holds.”Brock President Gervan Fearon praised BUSU’s executive team from last year and the current term for committing to a visionary project that will benefit students and the University community for decades to come.“This is a direct investment in helping students achieve balance and success,” he said. “Fitness and personal health are directly linked to our mental well-being, self-esteem and confidence. Brock is working with our students today to build an even more successful student experience of tomorrow.”The new facility is expected to give Brock a competitive edge when it comes to recruitment, said Brian Hutchings, Vice-President, Administration. When prospective students and their families visit campus, “they want to see where they will study, live and engage in recreational activities,” he said.Hutchings credited BUSU for bringing the project to fruition.“This has been a great partnership. The project has been for students, by students but also in collaboration with senior administration and management. This has success written all over it.”The complex expansion, which takes place within the Walker Complex courtyard, will result in the temporary closure of the corridor between South Block and Scotiabank Hall. The courtyard offers no exterior access for construction vehicles and equipment, making the closure necessary to allow for work to be done in an efficient manner. Details on the closure will be announced in the coming weeks. read more

Partisan Motors turns attention to mining with Maulwurf series of electric offroaders

first_imgPartisan Motors recently presented the new Partisan Maulwurf family of off-road vehicles for use in mines and quarries. Partisan Motors, on the basis of the Partisan Platform modular vehicle system developed by its specialists, presented a whole series of Partisan Maulwurf vehicles, which it says are ideally suited for use as the main vehicle for transporting personnel and materials in the toughest mining conditions (opencast and underground).Cited features of the Partisan Maulwurf series include a robust chassis to provide exceptional mobility, flotation and durability with an optimum power-to-weight ratio; very spacious interior, having a flat floor without a central tunnel; power reserve of up to 1,000 km; universal design options covering all the needs of the mining industry; load capacity up to 3.5 t; all the bodies of the series being unified as much as possible; logistically simple delivery of standard components and units; and several drive optionsIn 2017, Partisan Motors, represented by its Founder Yuri Postnikov, presented a prototype of the Partisan One model. “The off-road vehicle aroused a flurry of interest around the world, and publications about it were published on the websites of all prominent automotive and business Internet resources.” After that, Postnikov was approached by specialists of one of the German mining companies with a proposal to study the possibility of creating a car for their needs on the basis of Partisan One. “This development was the prerequisite for the development of a range of electric vehicles for deep earth work in potash mines, which perfectly match their purpose and the most difficult operating conditions.”“The use of a vehicle to transport personnel in potash mines imposes very serious requirements on its design, passability, reliability, cleanliness of exhaust and maintainability. The vehicle must be very spacious and, at the same time, manoeuverable in narrow underground corridors, confidently overcome slopes and ascents up to 45%, have large wheels for smooth movement on the rocky surface,” while also having a strong spatial protection of passengers, be extremely reliable and repairable in underground conditions. “A special requirement is the cleanliness of the exhaust, and best of all, the total absence of such a requirement, in order to reduce the cost of ventilation of the mine and increase the number of vehicles for the transportation of personnel in the vast underground spaces, comparable, both in size and length of roads, with any large Western European city.”“It is this very serious task that Partisan Motors says it has been able to meet. On the basis of the Partisan Platform modular vehicle system we have developed, the entire Partisan Maulwurf family of vehicles can be fully prepared and put into production within a short period of time for use as passenger transport or material transport in the mining industry (open and underground).”For this purpose, Partisan Motors has developed a fully electric version of the Partisan Maulwurf with a quick-assembling body made of high-strength steel, stainless steel profiles with a closed rectangular cross section. The interior of the double floor is filled with electric batteries that supply the motors. Under the hood is a self-contained unit with a turbo-generator for charging the on-board batteries. Each wheel is driven by its own powerful electric motor, which eliminates many heavy and bulky mechanisms such as gearboxes, dispensers, cardan shafts, reduces weight and dramatically increases the reliability, durability and maintainability of the vehicle. Thus, the car even at the maximum load is capable to have acceleration dynamics of a sports supercar. In addition to the three-door version of the Kurz with a short wheelbase (5-7 seats) and 5-door version of the Lang with a long wheelbase (8-11 seats), there is a 7-door version of the Jumbo with an extra-long wheelbase (13-15 seats), as well as a series of Pick-Ups Cargo with a single and double cab and different wheelbase. The design features with a spatial load-bearing frame made of stainless steel profiles of a closed section allow for the realisation of an almost busy inner space of the SUV, the maximum possible protection of the crew, and an absolutely flat floor without a protruding tunnel in the middle provides easy access and movement of fully equipped miners inside the vehicle. “The impressive design of the independent air suspension on the transverse levers ensures high smooth running, speed and manoeuvrability, and allows for a wide range of ground clearance adjustment.”“The long service life and durability of the Partisan Maulwurf series is achieved by careful development and use of reliable, high output components for assembly. All Partisan Maulwurf series vehicles are maximally unified through the use of components and aggregates of large series, which greatly simplifies the supply of spare parts for the mine fleet. The Partisan Maulwurf series vehicles can be retrofitted over time and with new requirements and standards. Such a vehicle with planned upgrades can be operated for 50 years or more, saving resources and budget. The logistically simple delivery of serial components and units will limit not only repairs and scheduled maintenance, but also the modernisation of the vehicle underground in the mining environment. The Partisan Maulwurf series can be produced with any other drive – all-electric, hybrid – in addition to the version with a conventional combustion engine. The design concept used here allows the vehicle to be manufactured to fit virtually any size and application.”last_img read more

Image reveals the 2DS is just one giant display behind its casing

first_imgThe 2DS is Nintendo’s attempt to grab a new audience of young gamers by making a handheld device that’s very hard wearing, but also cheaper to purchase than the 3DS or 3DS XL. In order to do that a few features have been cut, with the most noticeable being the total lack of 3D or a hinge to allow the device to close.Savings have been made internally, too. And it may surprise you to find the 2DS does not contain two displays, even though looking at the device suggests there are two. Nope, as predicted what Nintendo has done is to use one giant screen, but use the casing to block most of it from view.We know this because Rose Colored Gaming, who is well known for modding all kinds of gaming hardware, decided to remove the casing from a 2DS. You can see what was revealed in the image below:That is one big display, but why would Nintendo waste so much screen space? Well, it’s likely because such a setup works out cheaper than placing two separate displays and double the wiring and supporting components required to make them work. And lets face it, unless you decide to dismantle your 2DS, you’d never know.Another bonus of such a setup is it’s going to be easier to repair. Nintendo doesn’t need to keep stock of two different sized displays to switch out, they just take this one big panel out and put a new one in. Much simpler. What I would like to see is someone booting up the 2DS with the front casing removed. Is the hidden part of the display in any way lit up or has graphics from the game overflowing on to it? It would be amusing to find that was the case and that you could actually make a casing for slightly larger screens on your 2DS.last_img read more

Conductive Play Dough Inspires Young Inventors

first_imgStay on target Play dough has been igniting imaginations for decades. Now, a London-based company is infusing it with technology to fire up a new generation of inventors.Technology Will Save Us this week launched a Kickstarter campaign for Dough Universe, “squishy tech toys” forged out of electricity-conducting dough.Sixty-five percent of kids today will have jobs that are yet to be invented, according to the firm. So how do parents and educators prepare for this future?“The answer is a new kind of toy that combines classic play activities with technology to provide fun and education for our children,” co-founders Bethany Koby and Daniel Hirschmann wrote on Kickstarter.Three $40 kits—aimed at kids ages four to seven—come with dough pots, a controller, access to the companion app, and a user guide. Each toy does something different: the Squishy Sounds Kit explores resistance and lets users form a band by molding playable instruments; the Bright Creatures Kit illuminates circuits and inspires animal lovers to invent new critters, and the Electro Machines Kit introduces mechanics with moving parts for controlling spinning, zooming machines. The mobile application, meanwhile, includes interactive games and stimulating activities.“We truly believe that sparking the creative imagination of kids with hands-on technology will lead to a better future,” the project page said. “Kids are introduced to science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) principles through one of the most fun, universal, and satisfying squishy materials.”Each kit is available to pre-order individually (20 percent off the expected retail price) or bundled together for $100. Educators and party-throwers may want to pick up the $300 Ultimate Dough Universe Party Pack, which contains 36 dough pots and a gift box for storage.High-rollers can snag one of 10 limited-edition lots, complete with an illustrated hardcover book, three posters, 36 extra pots of clay, a gift box, and early access to the Dough Universe app as a beta tester.Kits will ship anywhere in the world this November, scheduled to arrive in time to unwrap for the holidays.UK-based Technology Will Save Us last year delivered the Mover Kit to 1,822 early-bird backers in 75 countries. Outsourced NHS catering workers win pay deal following twoday strike action

first_imgFollowing strike action that took place for two days starting on 1 May 2019, outsourced catering staff at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have been offered a pay deal matching that agreed to in 2018 for health staff directly employed by the NHS.In January 2017, around 70 staff members were transferred from employment by the trust to private organisation Sodexo. Trade union Unison argued that this cost each individual around £1,000 per year as their pay did not progress at the same rate as it would have when working directly for the NHS.In 2004, Unison and other health unions negotiated the nationwide pay system and terms and conditions agreement with NHS employers; each year, this pay system undergoes an independent review carried out by the NHS Pay Review Body.Unison stated that Sodexo previously refused to match the pay rise given to NHS employees. Following two days of industrial action and negotiations with Unison and trade union GMB, on 3 May 2019 it agreed to do so.Stike action was undertaken by low-paid, predominantly female workers at Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Bassetlaw Hospital. This is part of a series of similar recent actions taken by trade unions against Sodexo in disputes over pay among staff at NHS hospitals.Sue Cookman, regional organiser at Unison, said: “We need to agree some finer details with Sodexo, but I am delighted that an agreement has been reached. This is down to the sheer determination of these workers and shows what can be achieved when they stand together to fight for what they are owed.“The energy and enthusiasm on the picket lines has been amazing, and the support from the public has been heartwarming. These are NHS workers through and through, and their commitment to the NHS is unwavering, no matter who employs them.“The government needs to properly fund the NHS pay deal for all health service workers, including those who have been outsourced.”Stacey Booth, regional organiser at GMB, added: “Sodexo underestimated the strength of feeling amongst their workers. Members were adamant [that] until they received a promise the company would pay up the action would continue. Today, their persistence has paid off and we are pleased to announce that Sodexo have agreed in conjunction with the trust to pay the award in full and backdated.“This is a fantastic win for members, but one they should never have had to fight. We hope that the relationship with Sodexo will be much more constructive going forward.”A spokesperson for Sodexo said: “We are pleased that following further talks with the Trust we have reached an agreement which enables us to implement the 2018 Agenda for Change pay rates for our team at Doncaster & Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals.“The new pay rates are effective from 1 April 2018 and will be implemented by the end of June 2019 along with a one-off payment for the back dated pay difference since 1 April 2018. We would like to thank our team for their continued hard work in ensuring the standard of care for patients is maintained.”last_img read more

Centre Asks SC to Spare 46 Illegal Coal Blocks to Meet Power

first_imgThe Central Government, on Monday, urged the Supreme Court to take immediate action on the fate of the illegal coal block allocations, but has requested not to invalidate 46 operational ones.Pointing at the critical power condition in the country, Attorney General Mukul Rahtogi asked the apex court to spare at least 46 coal blocks that has been declared illegal among 218 total blocks. He told the court that these blocks are either producing coal or is in the process of producing the much needed fuel at the time. A total of 40 blocks is currently operational while rest 6 blocks are expected to become operational shortly, Times of India reported. However, Rohtagi told SC that the Centre would accept whatever decision the apex court takes on the coal block allocation scam. The Centre is ready for the cancellation of the illegal and arbitrary allocation but urged the SC to take immediate decision as government would need to begin instant auctioning of the coal blocks to meet the power needs, as India is dependent mostly on coal as fuel for power generation. On 26 August, SC had declared that all coal blocks allocations between 1993 and 2011 lacked transparency and were issued through illegal methods; and whether or not all the allocations would be cancelled has to be decided in hearings starting from Monday.last_img read more

Scottish MPs debate new independence referendum

first_imgScottish lawmakers on Tuesday begin a two-day debate on First Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s call for an independence referendum — a major headache for Prime Minister Theresa May as she prepares to launch Brexit. The Scottish parliament’s vote on Wednesday is widely expected to endorse Sturgeon’s campaign to get the British government to agree to a second vote after a 2014 one in which Scots voted to stay in Britain. The semi-autonomous Scottish government wants to ask the people of Scotland to reconsider their vote against independence with a new referendum before Britain is expected to leave the EU in 2019.Sturgeon, leader of the ruling Scottish National Party (SNP), intends to use the Edinburgh parliament’s voice to assert Scotland’s “sovereign right” to choose its own future. She said her Brexit compromise for Scotland to be allowed to remain in the European single market even as the rest of Britain leaves had been met with “a brick wall of intransigence” in London. The Scottish parliament cannot hold a legally-binding referendum without London’s consent — and Conservative Prime Minister Theresa May has insisted that “now is not the time” for a vote. But Sturgeon has said it would be “democratically indefensible” to block a referendum, although she has signalled she is willing to negotiate on a date.”This crucial decision over our future should not be made unilaterally by me, or by the Prime Minister,” she said.”It should be made by the people of Scotland, and I call on parliament to give the people that choice.”The SNP does not have an outright majority in Edinburgh, but it has already secured the support of the Green party for another independence bid.Patrick Harvie, leader of the Greens, said: “I think Theresa May will be taking a huge risk… if she refuses to acknowledge that we have a right in Scotland to have a say about our future.”- ‘No public or political consent’ -Scotland voted against independence by 55 percent in 2014, but the campaign left the unionist camp politically divided while nationalists flocked to the SNP in their droves. The SNP won all but three Scottish seats in the British parliament in 2015 and Sturgeon stood for re-election to the Edinburgh parliament in May 2016 on a pledge to hold another independence referendum if Scotland was “dragged out” of the EU against its will. The SNP gained twice as many votes as the other parties, and Scotland was indeed outvoted by England and Wales in the Brexit referendum the following month, sparking a fresh constitutional crisis. But Sturgeon has yet to convince a sceptical electorate, with a series of recent polls showing support for independence has barely moved since 2014 — including a Panelbase poll concluded on Friday which found it stood at 44 percent.”We believe a referendum cannot happen while the Brexit process is being played out,” said Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson — May’s most senior representative in Edinburgh.”We believe a referendum should not happen when there is no public or political consent for it to happen.”John Curtice, professor of politics at the University of Strathclyde, suggested May’s intransigence and the current lack of public support for another referendum may actually work in Sturgeon’s favour.”The ‘Yes’ side still has considerable ground to make. More time to argue her case might, in truth, be just what Nicola Sturgeon wants,” he said.last_img read more
