Sans Souci man granted $65,000 bail for threatening, assaulting neighbours

first_imgThirty-year-old construction worker Chandricka Hardyal of Sans Souci, Canal Number One, West Bank Demerara was released on ,000 bail on allegations that he had assaulted and threatened his neighbours. The charges he faced as he stood before Wales Magistrate Rushell Liverpool last Thursday alleged that on November 6, 2017 at Sans Souci, he made use of threatening language to Rosita Williams; and further, that he assaulted Udit Persaud.Hardyal denied the charges, and Police Prosecutor Sergeant Campbell objected to bail on grounds that the accused had before the court similar matters involving his neighbours. Prosecutor Campbell further observed that the accused and the virtual complainants live in the same yard at Sans Souci.Magistrate Liverpool asked Hardyal if he had ever been charged prior to this month’s incident, and he responded in the affirmative. The accused then told the court that he had been incarcerated for one month.“It was a story with me and my child mother,” Hardyal explained.After brief consideration, Magistrate Liverpool placed the accused father on a bond to keep the peace for the duration of the case, and thereafter released him on $65,000 bail.He was escorted into custody by a police rank, but after a female relative posted his bail, Hardyal exited the courtyard, removed his shirt from inside his trousers, and adorned himself with sunglasses.last_img read more

Saravana Bhavan founder P Rajagopal critical, on ventilator

first_imgP Rajagopal, the founder of famous South Indian food chain Saravana Bhavan, has been put on a ventilator after suffering a massive cardiac arrest on Saturday night.Doctors in Stanley hospital said Rajagopal is in a critical condition and he is diabetic and a patient of hypertension.He has been given permission to be shifted to a private hospital by the Madras High Court. This decision of the MHC comes following a plea moved by P Rajagopal’s son P Saravanan in view of his deteriorating health condition.The Bench of Justices MM Sundaresh and B Nirmal Kumar allowed Rajagopal to be moved to Vijaya Hospital in Chennai.Rajagopal had surrendered in court on July 9 to serve his life imprisonment for the kidnap and murder of a man named Prince Shanthakumar, husband of a lady named Jeevajothi whom Rajagopal wanted to marry as his third wife.Rajagopal after being taken into custody by the Puzhal prison officials was admitted to the prison ward of theStanley Medical College and Hospital, Chennai on the day of his surrender itself. Rajagopal had come to the court in a dramatic manner – in an ambulance with oxygen mask attached to his face. Rajagopal’s counsel had even sort more time for his surrender stating his ill health. But this plea was rejected by the Madras High Court.His appeal against the Madras High Court order upholding the trial court’s judgement convicting him was rejected by the apex court in March this year.In October 2001, the daughter of a Saravana Bhavan employee and her husband were kidnapped. Jeevajothi was the daughter of an assistant manager at one of Saravana Bhavan’s Chennai branches. Rajagopal wanted to marry Jeevajothi as an astrologer had told him to marry one Jeevajothi to become one of the richest in the country.advertisementRajagopal then was already married with two wives.Despite Rajagopal’s advances and threats, Jeevajothi went on to marry one Prince Santhakumar, a man she loved. In 2001, after the kidnapping, Jeevajothi’s husband Santhakumar’s body was found by the forest department officials from inside the Tiger Chola forests in Kodaikanal on October 31.His post-mortem report had said the cause of death was asphyxia due to throttling. Soon after, police found the cloth used for the murder.In 2004, a sessions court found Rajagopal guilty of the crime and sentenced him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment.Rajagopal challenged the sessions court verdict in the Madras High Court but was given life imprisonment in 2009.Rajagopal once again appealed against the verdict in the Supreme court, which upheld the Madras High Court order in March 2019.Rajgopal was asked to surrender on July 7, but he appealed again, asking for more time owing to his ill health.
