Widgets, portable chunks of online code that can be installed and executed within any HTML-based Web page, have become ubiquitous with magazine sites over the last few years. From exercise calendars to fashion finders and investment calculators, publishers are getting creative with widgets to bolster the user experience and time spent on their sites. While a new widget is born every day—and there’s no shortage of copycats—some publishers have created original and innovative tools to engage their users. Here, Folio: takes a deep-dive into a few that are working.Celebrity Meter WidgetPublisher: Wired.comWith a need to always be ahead of the curve when it comes to cool technologies, last year Wired.com created The Wired Celebrity Meter widget, culling a series of external services and APIs to arrive at an estimate of a person’s reputation or “fame status” online. Receiving thousands of page views to date, according to Wired.com’s technology manager Paul Fisher, a large part of its success has stemmed from the “embed” feature, allowing users to easily embed it within any site or blog. It has also “baked-in” several default, online celebrities as widget options to be used as a point of comparison.Deep Dive Content WidgetPublisher: F+W MediaDeveloped with Impelsys’ iPublishCentral, F+W’s deep dive widget is used across the company’s eCommerce stores. “We are nearly complete with our first batch of 1,000 widgets, with a total of 3,000 book and magazine titles anticipated in 2009,” says F+W Media president Sara Domville. The same widget is used to drive traffic by appearing in blogs, social media sites, articles and promotional marketing. “We pay a per title, per month fee for each widget at a negotiated rate,” she says. While there is no revenue share for F+W, there is a cost to the publisher for the creation of the material for each widget —PDF’s and digital content must be put in the proper format and include the appropriate front and back matter of the publication. The majority of use is focused on enhancing direct-to-consumer sales in eCommerce stores. Q+A Poll CreatorPublisher: SodaHead.comSocial networking site SodaHead has created a question-and-answer widget. Users can take questions from the site and create their own polls based on those questions and put it on their own blogs or profiles. Media outlets like Technorati, The New York Post and ABCNews.com have adopted this widget to feature SodaHead-generated polls on their sites. Scavenger Hunt WidgetPublisher: Cafemom.comCafemom.com, a social network targeting new moms, created a stir with its laundry scavenger hunt widget. The game focuses on who can do the most loads of laundry the fastest with a tiny, moveable bleach bottle. Originally created as a widget for sponsor Clorox, it grew to have an unanticipated following. “We had tens of thousands of moms playing this game with each other—the brand was in the game experience,” says Laura Fortner, senior vice president of marketing and insights for Cafemom.com. “There was even a group that had thousands of members.” SIDEBARApp-tastic OptionsTest these magazine apps out now, free to download at the iTunes App Store.Epicurious’ Recipes & Shopping List: On the Go and In the KitchenPublisher: Condé NastFunction: An intelligent recipe and shopping list for users featuring 25,000 pro recipes, and a toggle between shopping and cooking formats.Intelligent InvestingPublisher: Forbes.comFunction: Investment philosophies, global economics, Steve Forbes video series and quotes.Seventeen’s Fashion FinderPublisher: HearstFunction: Aimed at teenage girls, this app enables shoppers to search for fashion products by look, item, brand, cover-star picks and price. Adrian Dennis / AFP / Getty Images Vodafone apparently discovered hidden backdoors in Huawei equipment as far back as 2011.The UK-based carrier found vulnerabilities in routers and other equipment that could have given scandal-scarred Chinese company Huawei unauthorized access to Vodafone’s network in Italy, Bloomberg reported Tuesday. Both Vodafone and Huawei told Bloomberg that these vulnerabilities were addressed in 2011 and 2012. However, the outlet reported that the vulnerabilities remained after that and could also be found in Vodafone’s UK, German, Spanish and Portuguese businesses, citing anonymous sources. Vodafone apparently kept using Huawei equipment because it was competitively priced. Huawei P30 Pro’s four rear cameras from every angle Security Internet Services Share your voice Vodafone disputed the report in an emailed statement, saying the “backdoor” mentioned is a protocol used to perform diagnostic functions and wouldn’t have been accessible from the internet.”In addition, we have no evidence of any unauthorized access. This was nothing more than a failure to remove a diagnostic function after development,” the spokesperson wrote. “The issues were identified by independent security testing, initiated by Vodafone as part of our routine security measures, and fixed at the time by Huawei.”Huawei mirrored this statement, noting that it addressed the “historical vulnerabilities” in 2011 and 2012.”Software vulnerabilities are an industry-wide challenge,” a spokesperson said via email. “Like every ICT vendor we have a well-established public notification and patching process, and when a vulnerability is identified we work closely with our partners to take the appropriate corrective action.”Bloomberg didn’t immediately respond to a request for further comment. The story comes as China urges Britain to let Huawei play a role in developing its next-generation 5G wireless network, even as the US pressures its European allies not to adopt Huawei’s 5G equipment. US officials have said the gear could be used to spy for China. Huawei denies the allegations. Comments Now playing: Watch this: 1:11 Huawei Vodafone

According to leaked drafts of the policy, the administration is looking to set income limits, so green cards would be harder to obtain for less-affluent legal immigrants, usually coming to the country through a family connection. Share Immigrants earning less than 250 percent above the federal poverty line ($62,000/year for a family of four) would have their income count against them when immigration officials are deciding whether or not to grant them a visa. New data from the Washington D.C.-based Migration Policy Institute (MPI) show the people most likely to meet income requirements come from Europe, Canada and Oceania (Australia), while immigrants from Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean are most likely not to meet the income threshold. “It might change the face of future immigrants coming to the state (Texas),” said Jeanne Batalova, an MPI senior analyst, “but also, it raises the question, what will happen to people who could be eligible, but cannot clear those new standards.”Because the considered rules could have large impacts on the race and ethnicities of future legal immigrants, some experts say it’s a way of bringing back the Immigration Act of 1924, which set quotas on how many people could immigrate from each country to maintain the racial and ethnic makeup of the United States at the time. Number and Share of Recently Arrived, Legally Present Noncitizens in Families with Annual Incomes below 250 Percent of the Federal Poverty Line (FPL) by Region of Birth, United States and Texas, 2014-16Note: Recently arrived legally present noncitizens are persons with green cards or legal nonimmigrant visas who came to the United States in the five years prior to the survey.Source: Migration Policy Institute (MPI) analysis of data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s pooled 2014-16 American Community Survey and 2008 Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) with MPI legal-status assignments.Recently Arrived, Legally Present Noncitizens: Total and in Families with Annual Incomes below 250 Percent of the Federal Poverty Line, United States and Texas, 2014-16Source: Migration Policy Institute (MPI) analysis of data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s pooled 2014-16 American Community Survey and 2008 Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) with MPI legal-status assignments. The policy stands to have a greater impact on Texas because of the size and countries of origin of the immigrant community in the state. “Proportionately speaking, Texas is likely to be affected more than other states in the United States,” said Batalova. The policy would also greatly expand (from 3 percent to 47 percent) the share of legal immigrants that would be deemed a “public charge” based on their use, or their dependent’s use, of public benefits.A public charge determination weighs heavily against a legally present non citizen when an immigration official is deciding to grant or deny them a green card or visa. The new public charge rules would apply to nearly half of all lawfully present immigrants, including some 1.3 million Texans.Proposed public charge rules would also have major chilling effects on immigrant use of benefits like Medicaid and food stamps. “It potentially creates an enormous chilling effect,” said Mark Greenberg, senior fellow at the Migration Policy Institute, “which could leave families with children fearful that receipt of publicly funded health care assistance is going to hurt their ability to get green cards or to get another family member admitted to the country.”
