South Africa, Spain to cement relations

first_img2 July 2012 South Africa and Spain are to advance bilateral political and economic relations when the two countries meet for their eighth annual consultations this week. International Relations Deputy Minister Ebrahim Ebrahim will lead the South African delegation during the talks, which will be held in Madrid on Monday and Tuesday. The visit takes place within the context of enhancing North-South Dialogue. “The visit will afford South Africa an opportunity to further strengthen bilateral relations with Spain in support of South Africa’s national priorities and foreign policy objectives by promoting high-level consultations to discuss bilateral, regional, multilateral and other international issues of mutual concern,” the Department of International Relations said in a statement on Friday. The South Africa-Spain Annual Consultations serve as the main forum for co-ordinating relations between the two countries and it was established in terms of a memorandum of understanding signed in December 2000. The two countries enjoy cordial relations as Spain places a high priority on its relations with the African continent, as seen by its 2009-2012 “Africa Plan”. The plan pledges support for the Sub-Saharan African development agenda, highlighting the need to harmonise, co-ordinate and develop both bilateral and multilateral initiatives, including the African Union. The two countries are committed to multilateralism, with Spain having supported South Africa’s bid to become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2011-2012. South Africa and Spain also share a common belief that United Nations governance should be restructured, particularly the Security Council and global financial architecture. first_imgLiverpool legend Aldridge: We must be ready for Klopp’s eventual departureby Paul Vegasa month agoSend to a friendShare the loveLiverpool legend John Aldridge says the club must prepare for manager Jurgen Klopp’s eventual departure.Klopp this week laughed off a suggestion from his agent that he could leave Liverpool because of the inclement English weather with the comment coming amid constant speculation over whether he will sign a new Reds deal. “It will be a sad moment when the time does come for him to say goodbye but hopefully that’s a long way off yet,” Aldridge said in his column for the Liverpool Echo. “I’d love him to stay forever but ultimately we can trust him to do what’s best for himself and Liverpool Football Club.”One thing we do know… when he does go, he’ll leave us in a really good situation and a better state than he found us in when he arrived, which is not always the case with other managers. New NSR Transit Record for Christophe de Margerie

first_imgzoomImage Courtesy: President of Russia/CC 4.0 license Christophe de Margerie, the icebreaking LNG carrier owned and operated by Russian shipping company Sovcomflot (SCF Group), has crossed the Northern Sea Route (NSR) in a new record time. The vessel covered the distance of 2,360 nautical miles eastward, from the port of Sabetta (Yamal Peninsula) to Cape Dezhnev (the Bering Strait), in just seven days and 17 hours during the month of July. The vessel navigated independently without any icebreaker support, sailing at an average speed of 12.8 knots. The LNG carrier was transporting a cargo of liquefied natural gas from the Yamal LNG plant at Sabetta to the port of Tangshan, China, where it arrived on July 31.The completed voyage also represents the beginning of regular shipments of LNG along the NSR from Russia’s Arctic gas fields to the countries of Asia Pacific.“This remarkable, safe passage across the NSR has required the crew’s utmost attention and concentration. Ice conditions along the route were severe, especially in the East Siberian Sea, and the vessel experienced navigation in extended periods of limited visibility. The navigational and hydrographic situation within Arctic regions remains as challenging as ever,” Igor Tonkovidov, Executive Vice President and COO/CTO of SCF Group, said.“The crew of Christophe de Margerie was able to maintain a rapid yet safe speed for the tanker through effective organisation of bridge watch-keeping, highly skilled navigation, slowing the ship when approaching challenging ice fields and passing them at a safe speed, and moving reasonably quicker in areas of reduced ice cover.”The 172,600 cbm Christophe de Margerie is the first in a series of 15 icebreaking LNG carriers ordered for the Yamal LNG, to transport LNG year-round in the challenging ice conditions of the Kara Sea and Gulf of Ob.The vessel can sail independently through ice of up to 2.1 metres thick. Its propulsion system has a power capacity of 45 MW, which is comparable to that of a nuclear-powered icebreaker. The icebreaking LNG carrier can sail unassisted along the NSR westward from Yamal all year-round, and eastward for six months of the year (from July to December). The ships is membered by all-Russian crew numbers 29, including 13 officers, each with significant Arctic shipping experience, according to SCF.last_img read more

Wellsite pipeline leak spills 560 barrels of oil emulsion into Alberta swamp

first_imgCALGARY – The Alberta Energy Regulator says a pipeline owned by Calgary-based Mount Bastion Oil & Gas Corp. has leaked about 560 barrels of an oil and water mixture at a northern Alberta wellsite.AER spokesman Jordan Fitzgerald says the regulator has staff supervising cleanup by the company at the site about 65 kilometres northwest of Red Earth Creek, which is about 420 kilometres north of Edmonton. He says the company reports the oil emulsion spill affected about 5,000 square metres of swampy muskeg, adding there have been no reports of injury to wildlife or damage to nearby creeks.Data on the AER website indicates the spill is the largest of three pipeline leaks the company has reported in the past 16 months. In July 2016, it reported a pipeline leaked about 315 barrels of oil and 125 barrels of produced saltwater at a site 75 kilometres northwest of Red Earth Creek, and in December 2016 it reported a leak of three barrels of oil and 120 barrels of saltwater at a site 30 kilometres northeast of the town.Fitzgerald says the company’s previous record will be considered by staff as they investigate the spill. The company could face penalties ranging from warnings to fines or licence restrictions.Note to readers: This is a corrected story. The original said the spill was oil alone.last_img read more
