Apples stock sours Microsofts soars Say what

first_imgWall Street investors are enamoured with a newly emergent tech company. It has nothing to do with posting selfies or finding a soul mate. The company is instead making billions of dollars selling cloud-computing and other technical services to offices around the world.Say hello to Microsoft, the 1990s home-computing powerhouse that is having a renaissance moment – eclipsing Facebook, Google, Amazon and the other tech darlings of the late decade. And now it is close to surpassing Apple as the world’s most valuable publicly traded company.Yes, that Microsoft. As other tech giants stumble, its steady resilience is paying off. That Microsoft is even close to eclipsing Apple — and did so briefly a few times this week — would have been unheard of just a few years ago.But under CEO Satya Nadella, Microsoft has found stability by moving away from its flagship Windows operating system and focusing on cloud-computing services with long-term business contracts.“Microsoft looks like they’ve finally turned the corner and have become a viable cloud player,” said Daniel Morgan, senior portfolio manager for Synovus Trust. “They’ve made a very strong transition away from the desktop.”A brief period of trading Monday was the first time in more than eight years that Microsoft was worth more than Apple. Microsoft surpassed Apple again briefly Tuesday, before Apple closed on top with a market value of $827 billion, just 0.5 per cent ahead of Microsoft’s $822 billion.Apple has been the world’s most prosperous firm since claiming the top spot from Exxon Mobil earlier this decade. Microsoft hasn’t been at the top since the height of the dot-com boom in 2000.Microsoft became a contender again in large part because Apple’s stock has fallen 25 per cent since early October, while Microsoft hasn’t done any worse than the rest of the stock market. But the fact that it hasn’t done poorly is a reflection of its steady focus on business customers in recent years.Just a few years ago, Microsoft’s prospects looked bleak. The company was dependent on licensing fees from the Windows operating system used in personal computers, but people were spending money instead on the latest smartphones. In 2013, PC sales plunged 10 per cent to about 315 million, the worst year-to-year drop ever, according to research firms Gartner and IDC. It didn’t help that Microsoft’s effort to make PCs more like phones, Windows 8, was widely panned. But a turnaround began when the Redmond, Washington, company promoted Nadella as CEO in 2014. He succeeded Microsoft’s longtime CEO, Steve Ballmer, who initially scoffed at the notion that people would be willing to pay $500 or more for Apple’s iPhones. That bet paid off. Windows is now a dwindling fraction of Microsoft’s business. While the company still runs consumer-focused businesses such as Bing search and Xbox gaming, it has prioritized business-oriented services such as its Office line of email and other workplace software, as well as newer additions such as LinkedIn and Skype. But its biggest growth has happened in the cloud, particularly the cloud platform it calls Azure. Cloud computing now accounts for more than a quarter of Microsoft’s revenue, and Microsoft rivals Amazon as a leading provider of such services.Being less reliant on consumer demand helped shield Microsoft from holiday season turbulence and U.S.-China trade war jitters affecting Apple and other tech companies.President Donald Trump amplified those tariff concerns when he told The Wall Street Journal in a story published late Monday that new tariffs could affect iPhones and laptops imported from China. The iPhone maker had already seen its stock fall after reporting a mixed bag of quarterly results earlier this month amid fears about how the technology industry will fare in the face of such threats as rising interest rates, increased government regulation and Trump’s escalating trade war with China.Apple also spooked investors with an unexpected decision to stop disclosing how many iPhones it sells each quarter. That move has been widely interpreted as a sign that Apple foresees further declines in iPhone sales and is trying to mask that. While smartphones caused the downturn in personal computers years ago, sales of smartphones themselves have now stalled. That’s partly because with fewer innovations from previous models, more people choose to hold on to the devices for longer periods before upgrading.Morgan said Microsoft is outperforming its tech rivals in part because of what it’s not. It doesn’t face as much regulatory scrutiny as advertising-hungry Google and Facebook, which have attracted controversy over their data-harvesting practices. Unlike Netflix, it’s not on a hunt for a diminishing number of international subscribers. And while Amazon also has a strong cloud business, it’s still more dependent on online retail.___AP Technology Writer Michael Liedtke contributed to this report.Matt O’Brien, The Associated Presslast_img read more

For each age-wise band, the estimates are net of the members newly enrolled, exited and rejoined during the month as per records of the EPFO, it added. Houston You Have A New Point Guard Jeremy Lin

Jeremy Lin, the point guard who slept on his brother’s couch as he crafted one of the most dynamic 35-game stretches in NBA history, was allowed to walk from the New York Knicks to the Houston Rockets Tuesday night. The team that gave Lin the opportunity to emerge from a nobody on the bench into an international somebody – even gracing the cover of Time magazine — elected to not match a three-year, $25.1 million offer sheet he signed with the Rockets. So in essence, the player that charged “Linsanity” and the millions of off-the-court marketing and sponsorship dollars walked from the Knicks without the team receiving any compensation.Knicks sources and coach Mike Woodson said for a week that the team would match any offer to retain Lin. And considering Knicks owner James Dolan had doled out enormous money to the likes of Eddy Curry, Larry Brown and Isiah Thomas, it seemed reasonable to assume he would do so to keep Lin, a worldwide phenomenon. But, in the end, Dolan considered Lin is too expensive.Lin took to Twitter when it became official. “Much love and thankfulness to the Knicks and New York for your support this past year…easily the best year of my life#ForeverGrateful.”“Extremely excited and honored to be a Houston Rocket again!!#RedNation,” Lin added in another tweet.A team source told ESPNNewYork.com earlier this week that the third year of the Rockets’ offer — worth $14.8 million — caused the Knicks to consider letting Lin go. If the Knicks had matched the offer, they would have been subject to a luxury tax in the third year, potentially bringing their total out-of-pocket cost for the team’s salary to about $43 million in 2014-15.The Rockets’ offer to Lin would pay him $5 million in the first year, $5.225 million in the second and $14.8 million in the third, according to sources. The Knicks, realizing a $30-million penalty in Year 3 of the contract that would come with matching the offer,  made a sign-and-trade deal to acquire another point guard, Raymond Felton. Felton played one season with the Knicks, but it was nowhere near as exciting as Lin’s New York stay.Lin, 23, was a revelation, performing brilliantly for a stretch that included 38 points in a win over the Los Angeles Lakers on national television and hitting the game-winning shot at Toronto. In between, he was mostly steady, although he did have a turnover problem. He averaged 14.6 points, 6.2 assists and 3.1 rebounds in 35 games with 25 starts before his season was cut short because of surgery to repair torn cartilage in his knee.An undrafted guard out of Harvard, Lin was cut twice in the preseason, once by Houston, and played in the D-League, before leading the Knicks to seven consecutive wins that electrified the city and the Asian community. His rise earned him a significant raise, from $788,000 last season to $5 million this season. His departure has sparked much debate among media and fans in New York, a debate that will rage for quite some time. read more

Dwight Howard I Grew From Trade Rumor Experience

Dwight Howard‘s became NBA bad guy No. 1 after last season’s incessant complaining about his situation, where he would be traded to, his coach and just about anything else. Out of it came the nickname “Dwightmare.”Looking back on it now as a Los Angeles Laker, Howard said the whole protracted, tried saga made him stronger.“I think there’s a reason why everything happened the way it happened,” said Howard, who ended up traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. “So far it’s been an unbelievable experience for me. It’s like a dream come true.”Howard endured a tumultuous final season with the Orlando Magic in 2011-12. The three-time defensive player of the year demanded a trade to the Brooklyn  Nets at the beginning of the season, but the two sides couldn’t reach a deal.I did want to go to Brooklyn. That’s a place where I told the Magic that I really wanted to go,” to Stephen A. Smith and Ryan Ruocco on ESPN NewYork 98.7 FM. “[But] I was traded to the Lakers, and I think it was a blessing in disguise.“I thought I was going to get traded at the beginning of the year, actually; that’s when I asked for it. But everything happened for a reason. I had to go through last year to get to where I’m at today. It’s made me a stronger and better person for it. I had to go through the hell and the stormy forecast to come out to a place like this . . . and I’m thankful for it.”Going through it, however, was tumultuous. The perception was that Howard changed his mind about his loyalties every other day, fostering an impression of unsteadiness.“The whole year a lot of people were making up a lot of stories about ‘This deal is getting close, that deal is getting close to being done,’ or whatever, but none of those deals were ever close,” Howard said.Eventually, despite myriad trade rumors all the way up to the trade deadline, Howard stunningly agreed to waive his early-termination option and committed to stay with Orlando through the 2012-13 season.“I think a lot of it was people just felt like I was going back and forth with the whole thing,” Howard said. “But the business side, people don’t understand, when you’re doing business you have to be a shark. You have to demand things. If you don’t, people will run over you, and that was a lesson that I learned.“At the end of the day, you can’t please everybody. There’s gonna be people happy about me staying, there’s gonna be people happy about me leaving. I’m over that now. I can’t control the way how people feel about me.” read more

In Urban Realities both of the artists presents a glimpse of the trepidations, congruence and the conflicts of  urban life  in different forms through different mediums. Forchino chooses to create figures and scenes that give a comical twist to mundane characters. They are typically humorous subjects such as a family leaving on vacation in an overloaded car with flat tires etc. While Hemant Puri uses exploits of urban life and the contrast of traversing from semi urban to urban life in which space which is basic to every object plays a vital role.DETAILAt: Gallery Art Positive , Lado Sarai On Till: 10 April – 10 May (11am – 7 pm)FOR SOME TRANQUILITYThe group art show Tranquility at Shree Yash Art Gallery, New Delhi encompasses various eminent artists and brings them together by captivating a vast range of moods and moments in their respective walks of life. first_imgKolkata: Three youths have been arrested by Bidhannagar North Police Station for committing robbery at a cafe Coffee Day (CCD) outlet in Salt Lake. According to police, one of the accused was an employee of the same outlet. As his one-and-a-half month salary was due, he planned the robbery to get his due money.During investigation, the sleuths had found CCTV footages where three suspected persons were seen. When the CCD employees were shown the footage, they identified one Sankar Das, who was an employee there a few months ago. Later, police obtained Das’ mobile number and started the tracking process. As his mobile phone was switched off, the sleuths could not track his tower location. On Saturday night, Das’ tower location popped up on the screen as soon he switched on his mobile phone. The location of his phone was in Gaighata. Without wasting time, a team comprising members from the Detective Department (DD) and Bidhannagar North Police Station went to Dhakuria in Gaighata and detained Das. Later, Das told police his two friends identified as Biltu Sarkar and Surajit Roy had helped him to commit the crime. The other two youths were also detained from Gaighata area. During interrogation, they admitted to their crime and were arrested on Sunday morning. According to the sources, Das admitted to have come on foot and waited for the shop to open. Pentest tool in focus Metasploit

first_imgSecurity over the web is of the highest priority these days as most of our transactions and storage takes place on the web. Our systems are ripe for cracking by hackers. Don’t believe me? check out the below video. How can we improve our security belts around our system? Metasploit is one solution cybersecurity professionals look at to tight-lock their security with no risk of intruders. Metasploit, an open source project, allows individuals or organizations to identify security vulnerabilities and develop a code using which network administrators can break into their own code and identify potential risks. They can then prioritize which vulnerabilities need to be addressed. The Metasploit project offers Penetration (pen) testing software Tools for automating the comparison of a program’s vulnerability Anti-forensic and advanced evasion tools Some tools are also built-in the Metasploit framework. The Metasploit Framework  is a collection of tools, libraries, modules and so on. It is popular among cybersecurity professionals and ethical hackers to carry out penetration testing or hacking. They can use it to exploit vulnerabilities on a network and also make Trojans, backdoors, botnets, phishing and so on. You can check out our article on 12 common malware types you should know, to know about the different malware types. The Metasploit Framework is supported by various operating systems including, Linux, MAC-OS, Windows, Android and so on. One can use metasploit in both free and paid versions, where the free version(Metasploit Framework and Metasploit community)can be used to find out basic exploits. However, a full paid version(Metasploit Pro) is preferred as it allows one to carry out deep pen-tests and other advanced features. A paid version offers: Collects integrations via remote APIs Automate several tasks, which include smart exploitation, penetration testing reports, and much more. Infiltrates dynamic payloads to evade the top antivirus solutions Also, in order to use this hacking tool, one can make use of the different interfaces it offers. Metasploit Interfaces Msfconsole Msfconsole is one of the highly popular interfaces in the metasploit framework. Once you have a hang of this interface and its syntax, it will provide a coherent access to all the options within the Metasploit Framework. Some advantages of msfconsole include: With the msfconsole, one can access all the features in the MSF Most stable and provides a console-based interface With msfconsole executing external commands is possible One can experience a full readline support, tabbing, and command completion Msfcli Msfcli enables a powerful command-line interface to the framework. Some features of this interface include: Support for the launch of exploits and auxiliary modules. Great for use in scripts and basic automation. However, one should be careful while using msfcli as variables are case-sensitive, and are assigned using an equal to (=) sign. MsfGUI Msfgui is the GUI of the framework and a tool to carry out demonstrations to clients and management. The msfgui: provides a point-and-click interface for exploitation a GTK wizard-based interface for using the metasploit framework Armitage Developed by Raphael Mudge, Armitage, is an open source Java-based frontend GUI for the metasploit framework. Its primary aim is to assist security professionals to understand hacking, by getting to know the true potential of Metasploit. Advantages of using Metasploit One can automate each phase of penetration testing Metasploit allows pentesters and cyber professionals to automate all phases within the penetration test. This is because, the amount of time required to carry out a complete and thorough pen-test is huge. Metasploit automates tasks; right from selecting the appropriate exploit to streamline the evidence collection and reporting of the attack. Credentials can be gathered and reused Credentials are the keys to any network, and the biggest prize for a penetration tester. With metasploit, one can catalog and track user credentials for reporting. Professionals and hackers can also make use of these credentials across every system in the network using a simple credential domino wizard. Become a next-Level Pen Tester If one has already worked with Metasploit framework for years together, its pro version is definitely the next step to head for. With Metasploit Pro, the expert can easily move through a network using the pivoting and antivirus evasion capabilities. They can also create instant reports on the progress and evidence. The best part is, one can seamlessly use custom scripts by going into the command line framework. Metasploit in competition with other pentesting tools Metasploit is not the only tool that offers penetration testing but it is one of the preferred ones. There are a number of other tools in the market that can give Metasploit a tough competition. Some of them include Wireshark, Nessus, Nmap, and so on. Wireshark is a famous network protocol analyzer. It can read captured information from other applications and is multiplatform. The only con it has is, it has a steep learning curve. Nessus is a vulnerability scanner and a popular tool among the professionals in security. It has a huge library of vulnerabilities and respective tests to identify them. It relies on the response from the target host to identify a breach. Here, metasploit is used as an exploitation tool to identify if the detected breach could be exploitable. Nmap (Network mapper) is a highly competent pen testing tool used for network mapping or discovery. On comparing with metasploit, it has a rudimentary GUI as compared to Metasploit. Metasploit is moving into web application security with its 3.5.0 release. The community has also added native PHP and Java payloads, which makes it easy to acquire advanced functionality through web application and Java server vulnerabilities. The community plans to port more exploits and modules to the metasploit platform. Additional modules that target embedded devices, hardware devices, etc.and BUS systems, such as K-Line could be added in the near future. Video content budgets across India Korea and Sout

first_imgVideo content budgets across India, Korea and Southeast Asia climbed 12% in 2018 to reach US$10 billion, according to the latest edition of Asia Video Content Dynamics, published by Media Partners Asia. The 12% increase, up from 8% in 2017, highlights rising competition for audiences and production talent, especially in India and Korea. Together, India and Korea accounted for more than 75% of video content spend across the report’s seven surveyed markets last year.India saw a 24% surge in video content spend in 2018 taking budgets up to US$3.6 billion, according to MPA estimates. This growth reflects outlay on premium sports rights in 2018, including a price increase for IPL cricket, supported by continued growth and competition in TV, especially among regional languages outside the Hindi heartlands.Growth on TV entertainment is likely to soften in 2019, due to new regulations on channel pricing and bundling introduced earlier this year, although underlying trends remain strong, said the report.Video budgets in Korea expanded at a more modest 7.2% to US$3.2 billion in 2018, lifted by increased investment on movies and pay TV content. Indonesia and Vietnam also saw strong growth from a smaller base, while content spend in the Philippines fell and Malaysia was flat.Asia Video Content Dynamics tracks investment, production and consumption for TV, film and online video across India, Korea and Southeast Asia’s five biggest growth markets – Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.“The outlook remains healthy across much of Asia for the video content industry, with aggregate budgets scaling up in TV, film and online video across our surveyed markets. Much of this growth came from India and Korea, two large production dynamos with deep pools of talent. There are pockets of pressure in other markets however, especially for incumbent free-to-air broadcasters in Malaysia and the Philippines, where TV budgets were reined in. Falls in TV viewership have been especially pronounced in Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam, largely precipitated by digital competition as viewers flee marginal TV channels. Viewing data suggests that popular TV channels are relatively well insulated from online video competition, at least for now,” said MPA Vice President Stephen Laslocky.“Meanwhile, investment in online video content continues to scale, up 60% in aggregate to reach US$858 million across the seven surveyed markets, powered by rapid growth in India, boosted by Amazon, Hotstar and Netflix in particular. Online video accounted for 14% of all video content spend in India last year, the highest proportion of all our surveyed markets. Growth in online video budgets is also accelerating from a low base across much of Southeast Asia, although investment remains underweight in Thailand and Vietnam. Online video budgets are also constrained in Korea, due to the popularity of VOD services from incumbent IPTV platforms.”last_img read more
