NBA’s ties with China, worth billions, now under strain

first_imgAt least one Chinese sporting goods company said it was no longer cooperating with the Rockets and a sports news website In China said it was no longer covering the team.“There is no doubt, the economic impact is already clear,” Silver told Kyodo News in an interview Monday. “There have already been fairly dramatic consequences from that tweet, and I have read some of the media suggesting that we are not supporting Daryl Morey, but in fact we have.”The NBA is enormously popular in China: Oft-cited figures from basketball executives in both the U.S. and China say that 300 million people play the game recreationally there and that about 500 million Chinese watched at least one NBA game last season. And the Rockets are among the biggest team brands there, no doubt because Chinese star Yao Ming — a Basketball Hall of Famer — spent his NBA career with Houston.Yao is now president of the Chinese Basketball Association, which announced over the weekend it is suspending its ties with the Rockets in retaliation for Morey’s tweet. While Yao has not shared his personal feelings on the topic, it’s clear that the relationship between Yao and his only NBA team is currently, at best, rocky.ADVERTISEMENT Silver will address the matter at a news conference Tuesday in Japan, where the Rockets are playing this week. He then is scheduled to speak in Shanghai on Thursday, in advance of two preseason games in China between the Los Angeles Lakers, led by global sports icon LeBron James, and the Brooklyn Nets, now owned by Joe Tsai, the co-founder of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba.“What is the problem with people freely expressing their opinion? This freedom is an inherent American value and the NBA has been very progressive in allowing players and other constituents a platform to speak out on issues,” Tsai wrote in a lengthy open letter posted late Sunday. “The problem is, there are certain topics that are third-rail issues in certain countries, societies and communities.”And in China, discussion of the Hong Kong protests is one of those issues, Tsai said. The NBA’s relationship with China dates back about 30 years to the time when former Commissioner David Stern struck a deal with Chinese television to show games on a tape-delayed basis. Stern even talked about having an NBA-sponsored or branded league in China. The first league office there had three employees and flimsy furniture. Now, about 200 NBA employees work in China in offices in Beijing and Shanghai. Games are streamed live and Chinese media cover all the league’s biggest events such as All-Star weekend and the NBA Finals. The league has played preseason games there for years, has three NBA academies in the country — designed to find the next star prospect — and big-name players go there every offseason to promote their brand.Retired Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade has a lifetime contract with Chinese apparel company Li-Ning. Golden State guard Klay Thompson has a 10-year deal with another Chinese shoe company, Anta. Five-time champion Kobe Bryant has been visiting China annually for about two decades and is a massive star there, even now that his playing career is done. The league has navigated its way around one thorny issue related to the U.S. and China in recent months: a trade war between the nations that includes back-and-forth tariffs. The Hong Kong tweet, though, is likely to present a much bigger test for the NBA.“What I can tell you for sure is it’s not going to erase the decades of work that, you know, myself and everyone else in the NBA has put in in building a tremendous base for basketball in China,” Golden State Warriors COO Rick Welts said Monday in an appearance on CNBC. “And I think this will pass. first_imgChandigarh, Aug 29 (PTI) With an aim to promote sports, Punjab cabinet today gave its nod to relax the upper age limit for sportspersons desirous of joining Punjab Police. It has also decided to consider players who have participated in tournaments prior to 2012 Olympic games eligible for recruitment in Punjab Police. The decisions were taken in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal here.”To propel sports activities across Punjab, the Cabinet agreed to give three years relaxation in the upper age limit to the sportspersons who have won medals in international events and are desirous of joining Punjab Police,” an official spokesperson said.At present, the upper age limit of joining the police as Deputy Superintendent is 28 years and for Sub-Inspector and Constable, 25 years. In another major decision, the cabinet approved regularisation of services of 198 service providing trainers, employed under the Centre of Excellence Scheme of Technical Education and Industrial Training Department, as craft instructors.”The decision would result in creating a potential 4,000 additional seats in industrial training institutes to give further impetus to skill training in the state,” the spokesperson said. The cabinet also gave its approval to create three posts of Senior Scale Stenographer in place of three posts of Senior Assistants surrendered by the Cooperation Department.”This move will streamline the functioning of the department, besides providing promotion avenues to Steno Typists/ Junior Scale Stenographers,” the spokesman said. The Cabinet also gave its approval to fill backlog of 14 posts in Punjab home guards and Civil Defence department.advertisement”This decision would bring far more efficiency in the functioning of the department with the induction of experienced and disciplined ex-servicemen besides providing an employment opportunity to them,” the spokesman said. The Cabinet also gave ex-post facto approval to disburse development grants to every village panchayat, received from the 14th Finance Commission, “so as to enable them to undertake their infrastructure works in accordance with the recommendations of fourth Punjab Finance Commission”.The Cabinet also accorded status of sub-tehsil to Jandiala Guru.At present, Jandiala Guru falls in Amritsar district and its residents have to visit sub-division office situated in Amritsar- I for their revenue related works. Geopolitics, terrorism weigh on G-20 summit in China

first_imgFrom K J M VarmaHangzhou, Sep 1 (PTI) As the worlds top leaders are set to discuss the state of the global economy at this weekends G-20 summit here, geopolitics, bilateral issues and growing threat of terrorism have cast a shadow over the gathering while host China is keen on avoiding any references to the simmering South China Sea dispute. The meeting is set to take place in this picturesque eastern city on September 4 and 5 at a time when a series of terror attacks in many European countries claimed by ISIS have threatened the international peace and security. For China, the summit comes at a time when it is waging a grim battle to minimise the impact of an international tribunals ruling which quashed its expansive claims on the South China Sea (SCS), besides tensions in its ties with India, Japan, Britain and the US.Chinas irritation with the “S” word is palpable.”The South China Sea issue has nothing to do with this summit,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying had said in a media briefing recently when asked whether the issue would figure at the meeting.”I am not sure why you asked this question. It is known to all that the G20 Summit is supposed to focus on how to inject vitality and impetus to world economic development serving as a platform prioritising and improving global economic governance,” she said. While the summit is a challenge to Chinas diplomacy with its top diplomats tiptoeing around the S issue, to ensure that it does not figure in the joint statement, officials say the big focus will remain on Chinese President Xi Jinpings bilateral meetings with the leaders of the cream of the G20 group including with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the summit.advertisementModi who is scheduled to arrive on September 3 will stay in the city for about 48 hours, an Indian diplomat said.Details of his meeting with Xi on the sidelines is still being worked out.Chinese officials say besides Modi, it will be a big line up of bilateral meets for Xi including with US President Barack Obama, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his British counterpart Theresa May, each riddled with tense issues.Officials say most of the meetings are still being worked out.Modi and Xi have met several times and they enjoy a friendly rapport but this time the meeting is taking place at a time when the “Pakistan factor” is felt on Sino-Indian ties. From terrorism, the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) to USD 46 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and Balochistan, the bilateral ties took considerable beating.Officials on both sides admit that a more free and frank exchanges between the two leaders could smoothen the rough edges.Xi and Modi will also have an opportunity to meet again in Goa next year during the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) summit.”So they may carry forward their talks to the next meeting,” an official said. Pixel, Pixel XL: Google’s phones should make Apple, Samsung et al nervous

first_imgThe first Nexus smartphone came out in 2010. The Nexus One, as it was called, was manufactured by HTC. It has since launched a tablet, the Nexus 9, but no Nexus-branded smartphone. Six years hence, HTC is up to the task, one more time. The Pixel and the Pixel XL — launched on Tuesday — have been built by the Taiwanese OEM. Only this time, things are different.Unlike last year, when Google let OEMs decide almost everything pertaining to the Nexus; this year, Google wants to be — and is — in complete control. It has — to begin with — killed the Nexus brand which in itself is a major indicator of how things would be in future. The after effect is: this year’s Nexus phones are called the Pixel and the Pixel XL and these have been built entirely by Google. Not by HTC, but by Google. Also Read: Google Pixel, Pixel XL: Everything that you should know You absolutely have to be up to your neck in technology to know that Google, this year, outsourced the job — to manufacture the Pixel and the Pixel XL — to HTC. You absolutely have to be up to your neck in technology to know that the Pixel and the Pixel XL have been designed much on the lines of the HTC One A9 (and the HTC 10, a little). If you are not one, the Pixel and the Pixel XL would oddly remind you of the iPhone. They would remind you of the iPhone in more ways than one. Reason being that this year Google is following a whole new philosophy: if you can’t beat them, join them.Nexus was about software, Pixel is about hardware & softwareSince its inception, the Nexus line-up has been synonymous with high-quality unadulterated software. Hardware was important, but it was never peripheral to its existence. This year’s Pixel phones are about the hardware and software, working in consonance and not in isolation, just the way Google wants it to be. advertisementThe Pixel and the Pixel XL are Google’s first official entry into the mainstream hardware space. You can say, Google has been building hardware for quite a while now which is true, only none enjoys the kind of fandom that a certain Nexus 5 or for that matter even the Nexus 6P can brag about. Its Pixel Chromebooks, which are fantastic by the way, are still a niche product category when compared to its Nexus phones. But Nexus is dead and Pixel is the future. It is the future, because in 2016, Google sees itself differently, even more so with CEO Sundar Pichai and former Motorola veteran Rick Osterloh at the helm. With Osterloh’s hardware expertise and Pichai’s much-ambitious plans to put AI everywhere, it was only about time the philosophy — if you can’t beat them, join them — came to life. It has done just that with the Pixel and the Pixel XL.”Pixel, the first-ever phone made by Google brings together our software and world-class hardware, making the Google experience come to life,” the company said in a statement.Just like the new iPhone, Google’s first Pixel phone crams in the very latest in hardware and software. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor clubbed with 4 gigs of RAM. It will be available in 32GB and 128GB storage options. Just like the new iPhone, the Pixel does not have a microSD card slot.Google’s first Pixel phone runs Android 7.1 Nougat, in all its unadulterated goodness. “Pixel Phones will get software and security updates as soon as they’re available, directly from Google. When a new update is available, it can download and install in the background, so users no longer have to wait for the phone to update,” Google said.Having complete control over its hardware will ensure Google can work more closely with its in-house software team to achieve the best possible user experience out-of-the-box. There’s a reason why the iPhone stays slick and stutter-free longer than rival Android phones, you know. It is because its hardware is completely in sync with its software. There’s method to this madnessNexus is dead and Pixel is the future, for a reason, two in fact: the Google Assistant and Daydream. What distinguishes the Pixel from the Nexus is Google’s push for artificial intelligence (the company has for years invested in AI that has produced the Assistant) and it embracing the future, which is without a doubt, virtual reality. The world got its first glimpse of the Google Assistant when the company launched the messaging app Allo recently. It works like Siri, and it comes baked in to the new Pixel phones. This is because Google’ new phones focus on being AI first.advertisement”Building hardware and software together lets us take full advantage of capabilities like the Google Assistant. It lets us harness years of expertise we’ve built up in machine learning and AI to deliver the simple, smart, and fast experiences that our users expect from us,” Rick Osterloh, Google’s SVP of hardware said. But you know where all that push for AI comes from? CEO Sundar Pichai, of course! “Assistant will create a conversation between our users and Google. The goal is to create a personal Google for each and every user,” Pichai said.Google Now has been completely replaced with Google Assistant in both the Pixel and the Pixel XL, as text-based control gives way to a completely voice-driven (almost) approach. You can still use text, but Google is really banking a lot on voice-driven synergy here. “Your Google Assistant is always ready to answer questions and help you get things done,” Google said.To that effect, these phones also come with Google Duo video-calling app built-in and something called as Knock Knock feature. Knock Knock allows users to see a preview of the caller before they even pick the call up.Coming to VR, the new Pixel phones are also officially Daydream-ready. Google has also launched a VR headset, that it calls the Daydream View, to make full use of the VR-ready nature of these Pixel phones. That being said, it is important to understand a couple of things here. While the larger Pixel XL comes with a 2K screen, the smaller Pixel has a display that maxes out at 1080p. For VR to work, in all its glory, it is important that a screen has greater pixel density. Technically, the Pixel XL should be at advantage, and much like Apple’s bigger iPhone 7 Plus (that alone sports twin cameras on the back) Google maybe looking to market the Pixel XL solely on this parameter alone. That and the fact that it has a bigger screen. What I am trying to stress here is that just like the dual-camera is the USP of the iPhone 7 Plus, Daydream VR could be the USP of the Pixel XL.The Pixel camera already looks like a winnerOne of the more interesting things about the Pixel is its rear camera. Unlike the iPhone 7 Plus which boasts of two cameras on the rear, Google decided to go with one camera, and yet it looks like a winner already. The new Pixel phones sport a 12.3-megapixel camera with f/2.0 aperture, 1.55um pixels and unlimited Google Photos storage. On the front you get an 8-megapxiel camera. But, specs only tell half the story. The new Pixel phones score an impressive 89 as per DxoMark, which is the highest rating ever for a smartphone camera, Google has claimed. You know why it’s doing that? It’s because the iPhone 7 (and the iPhone 7 Plus) is already building great buzz around its camera. The Samsung Galaxy S7 is no slouch either. In fact, well before the Pixel came along, the Galaxy S7 was the only flagship Android phone to beat in terms of camera prowess. Now that the Pixel — which has a Sony IMX 378 sensor by the way — is in the picture, Samsung’s phone may have some stiff competition. Not to mention, even the reputation of the iPhone 7 may be at stake. This is because Google’s Nexus phones, in the past (especially the Nexus 6P) have had pretty great cameras. The Pixel looks oddly like the iPhoneThe Pixel builds upon the HTC One A9. But, that is something not everyone would know (as mentioned earlier). But, then since the Pixel does not have an HTC branding, it is even harder to tell from an iPhone. Yes, it looks a lot like it, especially from the front. From the back, though, it looks like a work in progress, a prototype if you may. But, then that’s just one opinion. There would be some who would fancy its design. Having said that, the Nexus 6P (even the Nexus 5X) looked better than the new Pixel, just saying. The new Pixel and Pixel XL focus on a new ‘premium’ design, according to Google and boast of an all-metal — carved out of aerospace-grade aluminum — unibody design, Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection, a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, USB Type-C port for charging and data syncing and 3.5mm audio jack. The phones will be available in India in two colours: Quite Black and Very Silver.advertisementDamn, the Pixel is expensive. Well, so is the iPhoneThe Pixel is Google’s costliest phone ever. In India, the base Pixel with 32GB storage starts at Rs 57,000, which frankly speaking is a lot of money. The Nexus phones, on the other hand, were relatively more mainstream. The Pixel isn’t a mainstream phone. Clearly, it has a different target audience, an audience that looks up to the iPhone or the Galaxy S7. The Pixel is ambitious. Pixel is not the end, it is only the beginningGoogle’s new-age Pixel is replete with top-of-the-line hardware and fancy AI tricks. But, it isn’t perfect by all means. It doesn’t have a microSD card slot, nor is it water-resistant. Its design is all the more generic, and it has no stereo speakers. Also Read: Google launches Pixel & Pixel XL, pre-orders in India from October 13In a way, the Pixel is a lot like LG’s G5 modular smartphone. Just like the G5, the Pixel is an expression of what Google is capable of doing. It doesn’t have to be perfect, for now, but at least Google has made its ambitions clear. Apple and Samsung should of course be worried. But, so should third-party OEMs that rely on Google’s software. Google just upped its game, and that should make all rival companies a little nervous.last_img read more

Who’s Virat Kohli’s girlfriend?- Thane school exam question!

first_imgHundreds of Class 9 Physical Training (PT) students of a local school were stumped when asked to answer an exam question on: ‘Who is Virat Kohli’s girlfriend?’.The question also came with three helpful options, the names of film actresses: Priyanka (Chopra), Anushka (Sharma) or Deepika (Padukone).A leaked copy of the question paper of Chacha Nehru Hindi High School, Bhiwandi town, went viral on social media, with many questioning the relevance of a cricket-Bollywood star’s personal lives in a school exam. (Virat Kohli a better chaser than MS Dhoni and Michael Bevan, already. The numbers prove it)The annual exam was conducted on October 13 by the school and the question figured in the objective section, as Q.No. 1(B).Despite repeated attempts, the school authorities were not available for their comments in the matter. (Why is Virat Kohli such a formidable chaser of targets?)However, while speaking to local TV channels, the school principal AR Pandey has passed the responsibility for the goof-up on the PT teacher, who allegedly set the exam paper. The principal admitted that the blunder went ‘unnoticed’ but has not specified any remedial measures for the same. Audi RS7 Performance first drive review

first_imgDrive Select reads Dynamic. Traction control is off, I’ve decided to take manual control of the gearbox too. I’ve got my left foot on the brake, my other on the throttle, with the engine holding revs at 2,000rpm. The tension is palpable. The last time I tried this in the base RS7, the non-Performance model, I couldn’t give the car gears as quick as it was giving me revs. I looked like an amateur, bouncing off the limiter.Performance:This time I’m playing it smart. Before I let go of the brakes, the fingers on my right hand are already tensed around the back of the paddles, ready to select second. I take my foot off the stop pedal. There’s an instant of hesitation. Then it all breaks loose. Nothing, I repeat, nothing can prepare you for how this car fights physics. These RS models remain the last few in the lineup that havent been brought into new-gen Audi territory, with the Virtual Cockpit. Performance variant adds a handy drive mode select on the wheel. (Photo: Gurdeep Bhalla)I barely processed short shifting into second. Audi claims you’ll be at 100kmph before 3.7 seconds are over. The car felt way quicker than that, asking for third just as the needle swept past 100kmph and onwards to 140kmph like air resistance was mere theory in a textbook.Keep an eye on the rev needle in manual, it gets away from you. (Photo: Gurdeep Bhalla)Engine:The base RS7 has 560bhp and 700Nm torque and launching it in manual had me hitting the limiter even in third. With this Performance variant, that brutality feels softened but it’s even quicker. That’s been achieved through modified exhaust valves and optimised internal turbo geometries to find an additional 45bhp and 50Nm of torque available on over boost for short bursts of acceleration. Like, overtaking a speeding bullet. It’s not a noticeable difference but the Performance variant is said to be 0.2 seconds quicker to 100kmph and 1 second quicker to 200kmph than the base car.advertisementFunny, the way the exhaust barks on start-up can make bystanders jump. (Photo: Gurdeep Bhalla)The eight speed torque converter sourced from ZF does a great job hiding any signs of turbo lag. Stepping on the pedal in any gear drops the engine back into boost territory, with peak coming in from as low as 1,750rpm. Leaving it in manual is the only time you’ll recognise hints of lag, with the over boost kicking in at 2,500rpm seeming like the boost step. The only downside of the torque converter transmission is the lack of launch control but I guess this saves the gearbox to a substantial extent.Audi MMI seems simplistic compared to todays systems but works agreeably. (Photo: Gurdeep Bhalla)Suspension:Cornering grip comes courtesy the Quattro all-wheel drive system and massive 275/30 Continental SportContacts on 21-inch wheels. Breaking traction requires real perseverance and even then the electronics kick in and right the scariest of situations. The steering actually plays a major role here, hiding a lot of what the tyres are actually up to. So while the car turns exactly when and where you want it to, judging the limit of adhesion becomes a dicey game.Motor takes to software manipulation really well, 750+ bhp is just a tune away. (Photo: Gurdeep Bhalla)Surprising is the tight turning radius, which again points to how city-friendly this supercar is. Further accentuated by the absolutely magic air suspension, that can raise or lower the car by as much as 20mm depending on which drive mode you’re in. Nothing but the absolute worst stretches of tarmac filtered through the cabin, though sharp bumps will catch it out.Frameless doors never cease to fascinate. (Photo: Gurdeep Bhalla)Interiors:Given the rate at which this car can literally consume roads, I really can’t think of a fault with it. The interiors feel quality and very, very special though the treatment is last-gen Audi. The notchback style boot also means packing for a cross-country trip is a cinch, then only limited by the fear of damaging those massive rims. With sunroof open, wind noise in cabin is bearable even past 100kmph. (Photo: Gurdeep Bhalla)Verdict:Apart from the extra horses in the Performance variant, you also get options as standard, compared to the base car – the air suspension, sports exhaust and killer-looking if maybe fragile 21-inch wheels. The air suspension especially is well worth having. You’ll need every last drop of petrol in the 75 litre tank because this car just makes you want to drive on and on. (Photo: Gurdeep Bhalla)In fact, it strengthens the whole appeal of the RS7 – a supercar that you can drive everywhere in comfort. You’ll need every last drop of petrol in the 75 litre tank because this car just makes you want to drive on and on.advertisementlast_img read more

Ultimate TT league will help Indian players, says Basak

first_imgMumbai, Jun 8 (PTI) Arup Basak, the Indian coach of Maharashtra United, a team in next months inaugural Ultimate Table Tennis League, believes that the tournament will provide much-needed foreign exposure to the host countrys players. “Ultimate Table Tennis will bring top international players to India. The Indian players have been very impressive in the recently concluded World Championship. So now Indian players will get to explore more foreign talents and play against them. They will also get an opportunity to train under foreign coaches,” Basak told PTI in an interaction. The players draft for the UTT is scheduled tomorrow at the NSCI in Worli here and Basak says Maharashtra United are keen to get the “best possible” players on board. “We are discussing with the management and our international coach (Ferenc) Karsai. We have targeted some Indian and international players. But drafting can be challenging, so we are hoping to select best possible talent,” said Basak, a multiple former national mens singles champion. Asked how will his experience help in guiding the players, Basak said, “The players participating in the league know me very well and even I have seen all of them playing in the national and international tournaments, so we already understand each other. “This time the players will be trained under the combination of the national and international coach which will help them rigorously”. Tournaments like the Indian Premier League and Indian Super League have helped cricketers and footballers respectively in the country and asked whether the UTT will do the same to table tennis, Basak said, “I believe that UTT will prove to be one of the best platforms for the Indian players to show how good they are in the sport.”advertisement”UTT will also help in educating the audience about the sport. Viewers will know how exciting and thrilling a table tennis game can be,” said Basak.According to him, the foreign players will help the Indian players learn new techniques, analyse moves and discuss the same with their foreign coach.Maharashtra United have got Ferenc Karsai (Hungary) who has been the men?s national coach for three countries – Austria, Canada and Belgium – and Basak as the coaches.Meanwhile, Karsai said UTT will be a great boost for the sport and its talent.”India has immense potential and I believe that UTT will give the platform to them to showcase that. Besides the international talent will also get to see how good Indian players are,” the Hungarian remarked. PTI NRB SSR DK DK BASlast_img read more

JP Duminy’s Test spot under threat, admits Faf du Plessis

first_imgSouth Africa Test skipper Faf du Plessis has conceded that JP Duminy is currently fighting to cement his place in the national side as the middle-order batsman’s alarming dip in form continues.Du Plessis was speaking after his side’s huge 211-run defeat to England at Lord’s on Sunday.Duminy has failed to cross 40 runs in his last eight innings. He managed just 15 and two runs at the Lord’s, something which forced du Plessis to admit that Duminy is not doing enough to maintain his place in the side. With du Plessis set to return to the side after missing the opening Test due to the birth of his first child, one option for him would be to take the place of Duminy. However, the skipper insisted that the Proteas would consider a few other things before coming to any conclusion.Du Plessis said that Duminy is a crucial part of their current senior team and that he is well aware of the fact that he needs to score runs to keep his place in the national side.”JP will be the first guy to say he knows he needs to score runs for this team and it’s no different for anyone else,” Sport24 quoted du Plessis as saying.”He is desperate to do well as anyone in that position. You want to try and score runs every time you go out there. He knows at the end of the day that it’s about runs,” he added.Du Plessis further insisted that Duminy always keeps team’s interest above himself and is always desperate to do well at that position than anyone else.advertisement”He understands that if it has to come to a position where there is someone else that needs to be looked at… he will be the first to acknowledge [that].He is a crucial part of our senior player group and he will always put the team interests above himself so yes, he will be the first to acknowledge that,” du Plessis said.South Africa will now play the second Test of the four-match series against England, beginning July 14 at Trent Bridge.last_img read more

Giants Batter Colon, Mets, 3-0

first_imgTweetPinShare0 Shares SAN FRANCISCO — Matt Cain was more impressed by Hunter Pence’s defensive gem in the sixth inning than he was with his own winning return to AT&T Park.Pence’s sliding catch that he turned into a double play ended the New York Mets’ best chance of scoring and helped preserve Cain’s first win in nearly a year.It also convinced Cain why the Giants desperately need Pence healthy and in the lineup.“He brings that energy, that excitement,” Cain said after San Francisco ended its seven-game losing streak with a 3-0 win over the Mets on July 7.“He was probably fired up as anybody after he made that play. The moment was just perfect.”Pence, activated from the disabled list earlier in the day, provided the Giants with a big spark offensively and defensively. The veteran outfielder drove in San Francisco’s first run with a fielder’s choice grounder in the third and singled in Joe Panik in the fifth to make it 3-0.He also came up with the game’s defining moment when he made a sliding catch in foul territory on Ruben Tejada’s long fly ball in the sixth, then threw home to catch Curtis Granderson trying to tag up from third.“He put it right on the money,” San Francisco Manager Bruce Bochy said. “It’s one of the best plays I’ve seen.”Cain (1-1) had not pitched at the Giants’ waterfront ballpark since July 9, 2014, when he earned his last win before missing the final half of the season following elbow surgery. The three-time All-Star pitched two-hit ball over six innings with seven strikeouts. Cain retired the first seven hitters, struck out Daniel Murphy to get out of a bases loaded jam in the third, then allowed just one runner over his final three innings.“It’s been a long time, a long road,” Cain said. “I definitely didn’t think it was going to be this long in between being back out here but it did. Today, it couldn’t have been better.”All-Star reserve Panik had two hits and scored twice for the Giants.New York’s Bartolo Colon (9-7), winless since June 12, allowed three runs and 10 hits in six innings.Kevin Plawecki had two of the Mets’ four hits. One night after getting shut out for the eighth time this season, the Giants jumped on Colon and took advantage of New York’s sloppy defense. Colon misplayed a soft comebacker in the second inning, while Murphy bobbled a ground ball in the third that led to two San Francisco runs. That ended the Mets’ 21-inning scoreless streak, their longest of the season. Both of Pence’s RBIs came against Colon. “He’s a good player. If you check you’ll see that he has good numbers against me. I think maybe that’s why they put him in the lineup today.”Four San Francisco relievers combined to retire the final nine batters. Santiago Casilla pitched the ninth for his 21st save.(MICHAEL WAGAMAN)last_img read more

Plenty of hope for APOEL despite defeat

first_imgSource: cyprus-mail.comTweetPinShare0 Shares An inspired second-half display against Rosenborg leaves APOEL with a decent chance of reaching the Champions League playoff round, despite a 2-1 defeat in Norway on Wednesday night. The Nicosia club’s future in Europe looked in serious doubt at the break but Giorgos Efrem’s volley provides plenty of hope for the second leg in Nicosia next week. The opening 20 minutes were scrappy, with APOEL committing numerous fouls which served their purpose as they looked to frustrate and slow down their opponents. But one quick free-kick caught the APOEL rearguard unaware, as a low cross from the left found Christian Gytkjaer all alone in the six-yard box, and he had the simple task of slotting it home for the opener.Just a minute later, the hosts nearly doubled their lead as a through pass split the APOEL defence and set Helland clear only for the outstretched toe of Boy Waterman to deny a second.Rosenborg piled on the pressure as Yann-Erik de Lanlay’s effort was parried out to the feet of Mike Jensen who then smashed the ball towards goal only for Carlao to clear off the line.APOEL looked to have weathered the storm, but on the stroke of half-time, Midtsjoe slithered past two before teeing up Skjelvik who then lashed the ball into the roof of the net with the last kick of the opening period.Thomas Christiansen made two attacking changes either side of the hour mark, with Andrea Orlandi and Efrem coming on for Kostakis Artyamatas and Vander, which saw APOEL finally manage to get higher up the pitch.APOEL chances were few and far between but it only took one to have a massive impact on the game, and possibly the tie.Coming straight into the line-up after re-signing for the club on loan, Giannis Gianniotas took on his full-back before crossing into the box which, via a failed clearance, looped into the path of Efrem. The Cypriot forward connected sweetly on the volley and the ball flew under the keeper to give APOEL a vital away goal.It was APOEL who looked the likelier of the two to get the next goal, and the leveller so nearly came in the 90th minute as Efrem unselfishly squared the ball to De Camargo, but the debutant could not get his toe on the end of it with the goal gaping.Nevertheless, the 2-1 scoreline is a positive one for the Cypriots, especially after looking dead and buried in the first half. Results from the Champions League Qualifying Round 3 first leg matches on Wednesday:FC Astra (Romania) – FC Copenhagen (Denmark) 1-1Rosenborg Trondheim (Norway) – APOEL Nicosia (Cyprus) 2-1FC Astana (Kazakhstan) – Celtic (Scotland) 1-1Tuesday, July 26, first leg: Ajax Amsterdam (Netherlands) – PAOK Salonika (Greece) 1-1Dinamo Zagreb (Croatia) – Dynamo Tbilisi (Georgia) 2-0Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine) – Young Boys (Switzerland) 2-0Rostov (Russia) – Anderlecht (Belgium) 2-2Partizani (Albania) – Salzburg (Austria) 0-1Viktoria Plzen (Czech Republic) – Qarabag Agdam (Azerbaijan) 0-0BATE Borisov (Belarus) – Dundalk (Ireland) 1-0Ludogorets (Bulgaria) – Red Star Belgrade (Serbia) 2-2Sparta Prague (Czech Republic) – Steaua Bucharest (Romania) 1-1last_img read more
