Steph or Seth Curry? Coin flip to decide who mom, dad represent

first_imgSteph Curry has been to the NBA Finals four times, winning three with the Warriors. This is his brother’s first playoff run.“It would be great for Seth to get a (championship) ring, but we can’t root for one son over the other,” 54-year-old Dell Curry said. “We’re just going to let it play out and have fun watching them both play.”Big brother is proud.“He’s had a very interesting journey to get to where he’s at, dealing with some significant injuries and surgeries as well where he missed two entire years basically coming out of college and this past year,” Stephen said. “For him to just grind and understand that he belongs on this level, it’s just we’re going to take a different path. His confidence in himself never wavered.”Dell said it’s been fun, and exhausting. The Currys have been jetting around the country for the last month on commercial flights, back and forth between Oakland, Portland, Los Angeles, Denver and Houston to see their sons play. They’ve attended 21 of their sons’ combined 24 playoff games, only missing two Blazers’ first-round games in Oklahoma City and one second-round game in Denver.Sometimes, Dell and Sonya wake up in a hotel unsure of what city they’re in.“Everybody says to us, ‘You guys have to be tired,’” Dell said. “I’m like, ‘Well, we’ll probably sleep for a week when it’s over.’” Literally. With sons Stephen and Seth Curry becoming the first siblings to face each other in an NBA conference final, it’s a dilemma most any parent would love.FEATURED STORIESSPORTSPrivate companies step in to help SEA Games hostingSPORTSPalace wants Cayetano’s PHISGOC Foundation probed over corruption chargesSPORTSSingapore latest to raise issue on SEA Games food, logisticsDell and his wife, Sonya, decided wearing a split jersey with the Warriors and Blazers would be “too easy.” Instead, they’ll flip a coin before each game in the best-of-seven series to determine which team they’ll represent.Stephen Curry can’t imagine how this might feel for his folks. Psy’s ‘Gangnam Style’ kickstarts Asian Games 2014 at Incheon

first_imgTo achieve international superstardom means you become virtually synonymous with your country. Over the course of the last couple of years, that’s exactly what has happened to South Korean pop artist Psy.His Gangnam Style single became the biggest rage on the internet in 2012, and on Friday, the 36-year-old was the headlining act of a glittering opening ceremony to the 17th Asian Games at Incheon.Sixty-thousand spectators were packed in the main stadium like sardines in a tin, eager to welcome elite athletes from across the biggest continent on the face of the earth. Doubts were raised earlier in the week about the slow pace of ticket sales for the ceremony, but as the appointed hour of 7pm arrived on Friday, there was barely a seat left empty. Since well before sunset, people had started trooping in.Security was tight but not an irritant and infants, youth and senior citizens alike stood patiently in lines to get past the gates. However, those hoping to post ‘selfies’ from inside the stadium were in for a shock as mobile phone signals seemed to be jammed.Korean pop stars and celebrities were an integral part of the ceremony, at which the Games were declared open by Park Geun-Hye, the president of South Korea. While Psy’s performance was undoubtedly the centrepiece of the evening, well-known South Korean actress Lee Young-Ae lit the Games cauldron. Usually, it is big-name athletes who are given this honour but the organisers gave the responsibility to Lee, given her popularity across Asia.advertisementThe theme for the ceremony was “One Asia”. Given the turmoil that affects the 4.5 billion inhabitants of the continent, it was an apt theme, choreographed in two parts, before the 45 participating nations’ athletes and officials entered the stadium.Indians know full well how the country’s relationship with the neighbouring Pakistan is often frosty, and similarly, North and South Korea are also poles apart. Yet, when the North Korean contingent entered the arena, there was loud cheering from the crowd. To be sure, sport acts as a balm. There is turmoil in Afghanistan and Syria, yet their athletes have turned up for the Asian Games in the hope there will be peace in Asia one day – as envisaged by Incheon. The size of the contingents entering the stadium had been kept limited and at the head of India’s shortened team was hockey captain Sardar Singh. Nattily dressed in grey trousers and a blue blazer, Sardar marched proudly ahead of women athletes in turquoise blue sarees, though a lot of wellknown names were missing from the parade.Sitting in the VIP area, Randhir Singh, secretary general of the Olympic Council of Asia, greeted the Indian contingent with a wave while his face was beamed on the giant LED screens around the stadium. When OCA president Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah greeted the crowd in Korean, there was a big round of applause. He then delivered his speech in English. “These are your Games, so let us unite and share the excitement and passion of the next 16 days,” he said.Close to 10pm local time, bright fireworks lit up the sky to signal the beginning of the fortnight-long sporting extravaganza. In the days ahead, Koreans and other Asians of various nationalities will witness plenty of success stories and heartbreaks. But on this night, Incheon well and truly laid out the red carpet for the rest of the continent.s.kannan@mailtoday.inlast_img read more

Frozen shoulder

first_imgDefinitionFrozen shoulder is when the shoulder is painful and loses motion because of inflammation.Alternative NamesAdhesive capsulitisCauses, incidence, and risk factorsThe capsule of the shoulder joint has ligaments that hold the shoulder bones to each other. When the capsule becomes inflamed, the shoulder bones are unable to move freely in the joint. Most of the time there is no cause for frozen shoulder. Risk factors include:Cervical disk disease of the neckDiabetesShoulder injuryShoulder surgeryOpen heart surgery Thyroid problemsSymptomsThe main symptoms are:Decreased motion of the shoulderPainStiffnessFrozen shoulder without any known cause starts with pain. This pain prevents you from moving your arm. Lack of movement leads to stiffness and then even less motion. Over time, you become unable todo movementssuch as reaching over your head or behind you.Signs and testsThe health care provider willask aboutyour symptoms and an examine your shoulder. A diagnosis is often made when youare not able torotate your shoulder. You may have x-rays of the shoulder. This isto make sure there is no other problem, such as arthritis. Sometimes an MRI exam shows inflammation. But imaging tests do not show specific signs to diagnose frozen shoulder.TreatmentPain is treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) and steroid injections. Steroid injections plus physical therapy can improve your motion. It can take a few weeks to see progress. It may take as long as 6 – 9 monthsfor complete recovery. Physical therapy is intense and needs to be done every day.Left untreated, the conditionoften gets better by itself within 2 years with little loss of motion.advertisementRisk factors for frozen shoulder, such as diabetes or thyroid problems, should also be treated.Surgery is recommended if nonsurgical treatment is not effective. This procedure (shoulder arthroscopy) is done underanesthesia. During surgery the scar tissue is releasedby bringing the shoulder through a full range of motion. Arthroscopic surgery can also be used to cut the tight ligaments and remove the scar tissue from the shoulder. After surgery, you may receive pain blocks so you can participate in physical therapy.Expectations (prognosis)Treatment with physical therapy and NSAIDs will usually restore motion and function of the shoulder within a year. Even untreated, the shoulder can get better by itself in 24 months. After surgery restores motion, you must continue physical therapy for several weeks or months to prevent the frozen shoulder from returning. Treatment may fail if you cannotkeep up withphysical therapy.ComplicationsStiffness and pain continue even with therapyThe arm can break if the shoulder is moved forcefully during surgeryCalling your health care providerIf you have shoulder pain and stiffness andthink you have a frozen shoulder, contact your health care provider for referral and treatment.PreventionThe best way to prevent frozen shoulder is to contact your health care provider if you develop shoulder pain that limits your range of motion for an extended period. PSG, Bayern reach last 16; Barca draws

first_imgsport × Layvin Kurzawa scored an unlikely hat-trick as Paris Saint-Germain powered into the last 16 of the Champions League on Tuesday with a 5–0 rout of Anderlecht, while Bayern Munich joined them in the knockout stage.Marco Verratti curled in a terrific opening goal—his first in Europe since September 2014—on the half-hour at the Parc des Princes, with Brazilian superstar Neymar firing in a second before the break. The world’s most expensive player was involved in PSG’s third goal as well, as his free-kick was tipped onto the post with France international Kurzawa forcing in the rebound. The left-back then headed in another from a Dani Alves cross and completed an improbable treble with an angled drive as PSG increased their goals haul to 17 and none conceded in four Group B matches.“The hat-trick is thanks to my teammates. I am delighted and the goals will give me confidence,” Kurzawa told beIN Sports. The French giants top their section with a maximum 12 points, with Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich progressing alongside them following a 2–1 victory away to Celtic.Bayern defeats CelticKingsley Coman pounced on hesitant Celtic defending to latch onto a long clearance upfield from goalkeeper Sven Ulreich and round Craig Gordon to slot into an empty net on 22 minutes.Callum McGregor slotted in a second-half equaliser, but Javi Martinez’s brave towering header—which left the Spaniard bloodied—clinched qualification for the Germans in Glasgow.“I knew that today would be a very difficult, intensive game. We’ve had a busy schedule recently,” said Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes.“It’s important that we have qualified, but it’s going to be difficult to finish top of the group because of our head-to-head record.”Man U waitingJose Mourinho’s Manchester United were made to wait to seal their passage into the next round despite a 2–0 win over Benfica.Benfica’s Mile Svilar, who became the youngest goalkeeper in Champions League history a fortnight ago, suffered more misfortune at Old Trafford as his own goal handed United a 45th-minute lead. The 18 year-old, at fault for the 1–0 defeat in Lisbon, atoned for that error by saving an Anthony Martial penalty, but Svilar was helpless when Nemanja Matic’s low drive cannoned off the post before hitting him on the arm and squirming over the line.Daley Blind wrapped up victory from the penalty spot on 78 minutes after a foul on Marcus Rashford.“We must get that point from the two remaining matches,” United manager Mourinho told BT Sport. “I am more than happy.”Barca draws, CSKA Moscow winsCSKA Moscow reignited their campaign with a 2–1 victory at Basel in the other Group B fixture. Luca Zuffi’s brilliant lob put Basel in front, but CSKA levelled through Alan Dzagoev in the second half before Pontus Wernbloom steered in the winner to leave the Russians level on six points with their Swiss hosts.Lionel Messi and Barcelona were frustrated in a goalless stalemate with Olympiakos in Greece, while Juventus salvaged a 1–1 draw at Sporting Lisbon after Gonzalo Higuain levelled late on following Bruno Cesar’s opener.Barcelona remain top of Group D with 10 points, three ahead of last year’s runners-up Juve, with Sporting on four.Chelsea thumped, Atletico toilChelsea squandered a chance to secure a berth in the knockout stages as Stephan El Shaarawy inspired Roma to a 3–0 success over the Premier League champions in Italy.El Shaarawy drilled Roma ahead after just 40 seconds at the Stadio Olimpico as he ran onto an Edin Dzeko knockdown to slam home from the edge of the area. The Italy striker netted a second on 36 minutes with Diego Perotti rifling in a third from 25 yards as Roma replaced Chelsea at the top of Group C with two matches remaining. Roma are on eight points, one above Chelsea.Atletico Madrid—finalists twice in the past four seasons—are heading for elimination following a 1–1 draw at home to Qarabag.Journeyman Spaniard Michel headed the Azerbaijani champions in front from a corner, and while Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey hammered in an equaliser, Diego Simeone’s side must now beat both Chelsea and Roma and hope other results work in their favour. BCCI rejects NADA demand of testing Indian cricketers

first_imgPublished on sport × bcci COMMENTS COMMENT In a stern response to India’s anti-doping body NADA, the BCCI has said that government body has no jurisdiction to conduct dopes tests on Indian cricketers. In a letter written on November 8 to NADA chief Navin Agarwal, BCCI CEO Rahul Johri made it clear that there is no requirement for NADA to tests its cricketers since the board is not a National Sports Federation (NSF) and its present anti-doping system is robust enough.“It is relevant to mention here that BCCI is not a National Sports Federation. Accordingly, NADA does not have jurisdiction to conduct dope testing of Indian cricketers in any domestic or international event organised or under the aegis of BCCI,” Johri wrote in the letter, adding, “In light of the aforesaid, there is no requirement for any BCCI official to co-ordinate with NADA for dope testing of Indian cricketers either during competitions or out of completions.”The BCCI response was prepared with instructions from Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators.Besides responding to the NADA chief, Johri also wrote back to the sports secretary, who had approached the BCCI in October to cooperate with NADA.Complying with WADAThe Ministry had stated that lack of cooperation from BCCI on the subject may run the risk of NADA not complying with World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Code.Johri said BCCI’s existing anti-doping mechanism is robust enough. “The BCCI already has a robust dope testing mechanism which is employed for both during competitions and out—of— competitions and the testing of samples by IDTM is already being done at WADA accredited laboratory (NDTL) under aegis of the Sports Ministry,” he said.He further claimed that the BCCI is compliant with the WADA Code. “You will appreciate that for analysis and testing of samples, BCCI adheres to the WADA International Standard of Laboratories and the WADA International Standard for Testing and Investigations,” he wrote.“Accordingly, the BCCI has engaged the services of same expert sample collection agency that is also engaged by the ICC to prove sample collection services viz, International Doping Tests and Management (IDTM). “The IDTM sends the collected samples for testing to a WADA accredited laboratory viz, National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL), as mandated by WADA. Since the CEO of NDTL is sports secretary, the dope testing for BCCI is conducted under the aegis of the Sports Ministry,” wrote Johri. He further reasoned that since BCCI is an autonomous body affiliated to the International Cricket Council (ICC), it is only required to operate within the rules and regulations of the ICC.center_img November 10, 2017 SHARE bcci cricket SHARE SHARE EMAILlast_img read more

Whyte was given the nod by the judges, but Parker’s team is unhappy a knockdown was scored against him in the second round. After a close decision loss to Dillian Whyte, the promoter for Joseph Parker is looking into appealing the result.Their reasoning is in the second round, they cite a clash of heads as the culprit for an unnecessary knockdown score for Whyte. In addition, Duco Events believes Parker would have won the round barring the knockdown. Moreover, a draw should be the result of the fight in their view. For the record, the official scores were: Stephen Gray (113-112),Christopher Fernandez (115-110) and Phil Austin (114-111) all for Whyte.Looking into the history of fighters seeking a similar change, the possibility of the request being honored is slim. Therefore, it is a high possibility the former WBO champion will have to accept the second loss of his career.Advertisementlast_img read more

HC stays AAP govt order scrapping management quota in nursery

first_imgNew Delhi, Feb 16 (PTI) In a setback to AAP government, Delhi High Court today upheld its single judge order staying its decision to scrap management quota as well as 11 other criteria for nursery admissions in private unaided schools of the national capital.A bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice Jayant Nath dismissed the appeal of Delhi government against the single- judge order, saying, “The appeal is devoid of any merit and the same is accordingly dismissed.”The bench concurred with the findings of its single judge February 4 interim order, staying the AAP governments January 6, 2016, order on 11 admission criteria scrapped by it.”The single judge is justified in arriving at a prima facie conclusion that the order dated January 6, 2016, issued by the Directorate of Education (DoE) is without authority of law. Consequently, the order dated January 6, 2016, has been rightly stayed by the single judge,” the division bench said. The bench also said, “The interim stay has been granted with respect to 11 criteria out of the 62 and the management quota,” making it clear that the allegations of malpractice should be investigated and taken to their logical conclusion. The 11 criteria include those relating to the proven track records of parents, their proficiency in music or sports, their empirical achievements, the gender of the child and whether the kid was the first-born or adopted. The single judge was of the prima facie view that Delhi governments January 6 order, scrapping a total of 62 criteria and management quota, was “issued without any authority” and was in “direct conflict” with the Lieutenant Governors 2007 order on nursery admissions in private unaided schools.advertisementThe judge had also said the court was of the prima facie view that “there is nothing in the 11 criteria which would show that they are unreasonable or based on whims and fancies and/or they can lead to mal-administration.”DoE had contended before the division bench that its January 6 order scrapping many admission criteria and management quota “was validly and lawfully” issued to ensure that admissions to entry-level classes like nursery are made in a “fair and reasonable” manner. It had claimed that the decision was taken “without any view to interfering in the autonomy of private schools”.The single judge order had come on the pleas filed by Action Committee Unaided Recognised Private Schools and Forum for Promotion of Quality Education For All, seeking quashing of governments decision to scrap management and all other quotas, except for EWS in Delhis private unaided schools for nursery admissions. JAITLEY-GST 2 LAST

first_imgOn a new timeline for roll out of the GST regime, Jaitley On a new timeline for roll out of the GST regime, Jaitley said it is a transactional tax and is not dependent on implementation only at the start of a financial year. “Once the Constitutional amendment is passed, subordinate legislations will be passed, you can start it then at reasonable notice. GST never has to wait for April 1, its not an Income Tax. It does not have anything to do with year to year. “As I said, my preference is to do it by consensus. After all, you see, governments of all political parties will have to implement it.” After years of delays and changes, GST was targeted to be rolled out from April 1 but has now been delayed yet again because it has not been passed by the Rajya Sabha. The Bill is supported by all parties barring Congress, which has 67 MPs in Rajya Sabha and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) with 12 members. Congress, the original author of the tax reform, is opposed to the current “flawed” version and wants GST rate to be capped at 18 per cent, a proposed state levy scrapped and an independent mechanism to resolve disputes on revenue sharing between states. The government has support of 155 members in the 242- member Rajya Sabha, short of two-third or 162 votes needed to approve the Constitution amendment bill. PTI JD DP CS ANZ SAlast_img read more

Champions League: Manchester City hold Ronaldo-less Real Madrid to stay in hunt for final

first_imgManchester City survived a late grilling by Real Madrid thanks to goalkeeper Joe Hart to hold on for a 0-0 draw on Tuesday that keeps alive their hopes of reaching the Champions League final for the first time.Playing in their first European semi-final for 45 years, Premier League City produced a cagey first-leg display that offered little menace, although crucially they denied free-scoring Real an away goal.Ten-times champions Real suffered a setback before kickoff when Cristiano Ronaldo, the leading scorer in this season’s competition with 16 goals, was ruled out with a thigh injury. His spark was badly missed in a turgid first half at City’s Etihad Stadium, but Real finally came alive after the break and the hosts needed two instinctive late saves from Hart to keep them in the hunt for the second leg at the Bernabeu next week.”It’s too close to call at the moment,” City captain Vincent Kompany said. “We couldn’t have wished for more. We have 90 minutes left and we’ll look forward to next week.”Neither side managed a shot on target in the opening 45 minutes, but Real gradually upped their tempo after the break with Gareth Bale increasingly influential. The Welshman curled one effort wide and had a penalty appeal turned down before substitute Jese looped a header against the crossbar with Hart at full stretch.Hart saved a Casemiro header with his left foot and then shortly after Pepe looked certain to break the deadlock from point-blank range but Hart blocked the shot with his chest.advertisementCity striker Sergio Aguero had a quiet night and their creative department was not helped when David Silva limped off with a hamstring injury after 40 minutes.Manager Manuel Pellegrini said he would not be fit for the return, although the Chilean was confident his side could prevail in the Spanish capital despite Real having racked up 18 goals without conceding at home in this year’s competition.”If you can’t win, then the best draw is zero-zero,” he said. “This season we have played very well away. Now we go to the Bernabeu with the same attitude as playing at home.”Real Madrid must attack a little bit more.”The hosts did produce a late flurry after Raheem Sterling joined the fray from the bench and the winger forced a timely interception from Pepe, while Kevin De Bruyne’s inswinging free kick forced Keylor Navas into some rare action.last_img read more

Samsung reports better than expected earnings

first_imgSamsung Electronics recorded a better-than-expected profit in January-March, as an early debut of its flagship Galaxy smartphones boosted sales of high-end phones despite flat growth in the overall smartphone market. The South Korean company said Thursday it earned 5.3 trillion won ($4.6 billion) in the last quarter, up 14 per cent from 4.6 trillion won a year earlier. That’s above the average forecast of analysts polled by FactSet of 4.7 trillion won.Sales rose 6 per cent to 49.8 trillion won ($43.4 billion) from a year ago while operating profit was up 12 per cent to 6.7 trillion won, broadly in line with the company’s earnings guidance earlier this month. Also Read: Apple Falls: First-ever revenue decline in 13 yearsSamsung Electronics launched the latest versions of its flagship Galaxy smartphones on March 11, about a month earlier than its new phones launch last year. The updated Galaxy S7 models sported new features such as expandable storage space and water resistance but were cheaper than previous versions.”Market response to the Edge model is better than expected in major regions such as North America, China and the Middle East,” Lee KyeongTae, vice president at mobile communications business, said referring to the Galaxy phone with a curved screen. “They are almost sold immediately upon supply.”Analysts said the early debut and Samsung’s pricing strategy helped boost sales of the premium phones during the quarter despite softer demand for the iPhone 6S. The absence of new products from competitors also helped. Also Read: 7 reasons to dump the iPhone 6S for Galaxy S7 Counterpoint Technology Market Research estimated that Samsung sold 10 million Galaxy S7 series during the month of March, up 25 per cent from a year ago.advertisementAs a result, Samsung’s mobile business posted its biggest profit in nearly two years, raking up 3.9 trillion won ($3.4 billion) in operating profit. That is 42 per cent higher than a year ago and the phone division’s biggest quarterly profit in seven quarters. The company also benefited from streamlining the type of cheap smartphones it sold in emerging markets, which helped save on costs for components.During the first three months of this year, the South Korean company’s overall smartphone sales declined slightly, but not as badly as Apple’s, according to the latest industry data. Samsung’s shipments dropped 1 per cent from a year earlier, while Apple’s sales sank 16 per cent, according to IDC, a market research firm.Analysts are divided over whether the strong sales of the Galaxy S7 series would continue during the second quarter. Also Read: Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge (and Galaxy S7) review: On the edge of perfection “It is positive that Samsung posted a better-than-expected income even though the first quarter was a slow season. But it was thanks to the effect from the S7 (released) one quarter earlier, which is why (I see) a limited reason to revise up the future earnings forecasts,” said Yoo Eui-hyung, an analyst at Dongbu Securities.Samsung confidently forecast its flagship smartphone sales will grow from last year even as the overall industry stays flat.”We are cautiously optimistic for operating profit to increase quarter-on-quarter,” said Robert Yi, senior vice president at investor relations. The second quarter earnings in the mobile and semiconductor businesses will be steady and the consumer electronics and display businesses will improve, he said.During the first quarter, the semiconductor division posted slightly lower operating profit than a year ago, contributing 2.3 trillion won or a third of the total. Its display division posted a loss of 270 billion won while its TV division made 510 billion won in operating profit.last_img read more
