Sans Souci man granted $65,000 bail for threatening, assaulting neighbours

first_imgThirty-year-old construction worker Chandricka Hardyal of Sans Souci, Canal Number One, West Bank Demerara was released on ,000 bail on allegations that he had assaulted and threatened his neighbours. The charges he faced as he stood before Wales Magistrate Rushell Liverpool last Thursday alleged that on November 6, 2017 at Sans Souci, he made use of threatening language to Rosita Williams; and further, that he assaulted Udit Persaud.Hardyal denied the charges, and Police Prosecutor Sergeant Campbell objected to bail on grounds that the accused had before the court similar matters involving his neighbours. Prosecutor Campbell further observed that the accused and the virtual complainants live in the same yard at Sans Souci.Magistrate Liverpool asked Hardyal if he had ever been charged prior to this month’s incident, and he responded in the affirmative. The accused then told the court that he had been incarcerated for one month.“It was a story with me and my child mother,” Hardyal explained. After brief consideration, Magistrate Liverpool placed the accused father on a bond to keep the peace for the duration of the case, and thereafter released him on $65,000 bail.He was escorted into custody by a police rank, but after a female relative posted his bail, Hardyal exited the courtyard, removed his shirt from inside his trousers, and adorned himself with sunglasses.last_img read more

US citizens warned of Guyana’s high crime rate

first_imgThe US Department of State has sent a stringent warning to all its citizens, urging them to exercise caution when visiting Guyana due to the evident spike in the country’s crime rate.In a statement on its website, the Department stated there is a frequency of violent crimes, commonly armed robbery and murder. It specifically highlighted that the Police network is hindered to effectively alleviate these incidents due to the lack of resources.“Violent crimes such as armed robbery and murder, is common. Local Police lack the resources to respond effectively to serious criminal incidents,” the notice stated. It further advised all travellers from the United States to be extra vigilant when visiting banks or ATMs and avoid walking or driving in the nights. Persons were also advised not to resist any robbery attempts they might encounter and desist from displaying signs of wealth, such as expensive watches or jewellery. The Smart Traveller Enrollment Programme (STEP) was recommended to locate victims during an emergency. In Guyana’s Crime and Safety Report for 2018, which was created by the State Department, Georgetown was assessed as “a critical-threat location for crime directed at or affecting official US Government interests”.It was indicated that the country’s crime statistics is above national average. It categorised local criminals based on their choice of weapons of local criminals and targets, some of whom are American citizens. However, Police Officers are also the victims in some cases.“Criminals regularly use weapons, despite a rigorous licensing requirement to own firearms. Handguns, knives, machetes, or cutlasses tend to be the weapons of choice. Criminals may act brazenly, and Police Officers have been both victims and perpetrators of assaults and shootings. Criminals are increasingly willing to resort to violence while committing all types of crimes. Criminals are often organised, travel in groups of two or more, and conduct surveillance on their victims. Criminals generally will not hesitate to show multiple weapons as an intimidation tactic during a robbery,” the report stated. The report added, “Foreigners in general are viewed as targets of opportunity, but Americans are not specifically targeted. Foreigners are very visible in public and should take precautions when visiting downtown areas. Most violent crimes against foreigners have occurred in the capital. However, there have been incidents of violent crimes committed in other parts of the country as well.”Guyana’s crime rate is concentrated in Regions Five (Mahaica-Berbice) and Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), but there are significant cases in other parts of the coast.Just recently, three bandits were killed during an encounter with Police Officers at Black Bush Polder, Region Six. Based on reports received, the Police operation and lasted a few hours, thus resulting in the death of the armed and dangerous men. After the shootout, the Police retrieved several weapons and ammunition including an AR-15 assault rifle. While these reports would have caught the attention of other countries, Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan disclosed earlier this month that Guyana is not in “really bad state”.“Sometimes this thing is emblazoned across the front pages of newspapers giving the impression as though we are in a real bad state, [but it’s] not really true,” he was quoted as saying. However, this analysis of the escalating crime situation in Guyana did not go down well with Opposition Member of Parliament (MP), Harry Gill; a member of the Parliamentary Oversight Committee on the Security Sector, who in no uncertain terms called for the Minister to either be reassigned or fired as Public Security Minister.“Like most Guyanese, I am totally disgusted by all the brutal, senseless killings and barefaced robberies taking place every day throughout the country, and the apparent lack of any coherent plan by the Minister of Public Security to end this escalating crime spree,” Gill said in a letter to the editor. He posited that since 2015, crime has escalated to dangerous levels, prompting the British Government and the US State Department to issue travel advisories to their citizens to exercise caution when travelling to Guyana due to an increase in crime.last_img read more

Weather rains on Rebels’ parade

Please try again.subscribeCongratulations! You’re all set! Despite inclement weather in Southern California the first month of the season, Quartz Hill High’s boys’ tennis team had completed all its scheduled weekday matches and was forced to postpone only its annual tournament, which was snowed out last month. The Rebels’ luck ran out Tuesday when their match against Knight was rained out, interrupting their bid for a 155th consecutive Golden League victory. “Coming off spring break, where we didn’t work out a lot, it would’ve been nice to hit the ground running,” said Rebels coach Bill Lenaway, whose team hasn’t played since March 23 against Highland. “Of all the weeks to get washed out, this week is not an ideal one.” Quartz Hill (7-2 overall, 3-0 Golden) was scheduled, weather permitting, to play a nonleague match Wednesday at Valencia, then return to league competition today against Palmdale and Friday in the makeup match against Knight. Lenaway believed a match against Valencia, a Southern Section Div. II team, would provide a good indication of where his team, which reached the second round of the Div. III playoffs last season, was near the midway point of the season. “It’s not something we have to reschedule, but we really want to play Valencia because they’re a quality team,” Lenaway said. “I don’t really know what they have coming back, but as a rule, they beat us. But that’s not exactly a bad thing. Right now, we need that. We need to play a high-quality match.” Misleading mismatch: Lenaway believes Lancaster, which lost 15-3 to the Rebels, is in shape to finish second in the Golden League again this season. “It looks like we beat them pretty bad, but there were a lot of close sets,” Lenaway said. “Antelope Valley (which finished third in 2005) lost a lot last year because they had such a strong senior class, so they’re definitely in a rebuilding mode. We haven’t played everybody yet, so I don’t want to disrespect the teams I haven’t seen, but Lancaster is solid.” Pray for sun: Lenaway is confident his team will be complete its remaining nine league matches in the next month, even if it means playing three contests in a week. “Hopefully, we can get into more of a rhythm after this week,” Lenaway said. “We have no more out-of-league matches, so hopefully we can get on track.” The primary concern is Quartz Hill’s tournament, which was rescheduled for April 15. “Hopefully, we can’t lose out twice,” said Lenaway, who has confirmed Alemany of Mission Hills, Burroughs of Ridgecrest, Moorpark, Antelope Valley, Knight and Palmdale for the event. “In the future, I’ll definitely plan a rain day. That way, if the first day is canceled, coaches can tell their players, this is when we’re going to play. It’ll be more fine-tuned from now on.” erik.boal@dailynews.com (818) 713-3607last_img read more

Maura, whose 8-year-old daughter Emer is in remission from Stage 4 Neuroblastoma, said it was a huge honour and boost for volunteers working with the charity to have their work recognised by The President.“Childhood Cancer Foundation has only been in existence for a few years, so it is was a terrific boost to everyone involved to receive this invitation from President Higgins and his wife Sabina.By spreading awareness of childhood cancer, the difficulties of treatment, the death of at least 20% of those affected and the long-term side effects faced by survivors, we hope to change attitudes towards childhood cancer.”To that end, Maura explained that the four children, who are all cancer survivors, presented President and Mrs Higgins with Gold awareness pins, the international symbol of childhood cancer awareness. “Childhood Cancer Foundation currently fund the salary of the play specialist on St John’s Day Ward, Crumlin. We are also funding a medical research project into the benefits of complimentary therapies for children who are treated for childhood cancers and will soon announce another project which will directly and greatly benefit all children in Ireland being treated for cancer,” she added.Earlier this summer the Childhood Cancer Foundation announced partnerships with the Gaelic Players Association (GPA) and with Emerald Garrison Ireland’s largest independent Star Wars costuming club, and work is already under way for the third annual Light It Up Gold campaign for childhood cancer awareness this September.“We’ve had a very productive summer and September, Childhood Cancer Awareness month, promises to be our busiest ever, but when we see the incredible fortitude and bravery that children show while enduring harsh chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments, we must continue our work for them and their families.”Anyone wishing to purchase a gold pin in support of the Childhood Cancer Foundation can buy one online on their website – www.childhoodcancer.ie The pins will be sold at various locations around Donegal in the coming weeks and details will be available on the charity’s facebook page www.facebook.com/lightitupgold PRESIDENTIAL SEAL OF APPROVAL FOR DONEGAL CANCER VOLUNTEERS was last modified: July 21st, 2015 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:CHILDHOOD CANCER FOUNDATIONdonegallast_img read more

Dublin homeless charities amazed by delivery from Donegal

first_imgDublin-based homeless charities received a much-welcomed delivery this week thanks to kind-hearted Donegal donators.Almost 600 backpacks were sent to Dublin this week following a ‘School Bags for the Homeless’ appeal which inspired hundreds of people around Donegal to pack worthwhile gifts for strangers in need. The idea began with Annagry woman Linda Ní Ghallchóir, who wanted to make a difference for people living on the streets. Linda started a school bag appeal – where people could fill bags with essential items to help people who are living rough or in emergency accommodation. The project, which was shared widely online, spurred people to make an effort to do #OneActOfKindness and team up for large-scale charity collections. The result was 581 schoolbags plus many other vital items being packed and sent to Dublin as the cold winter nights set in. €300 was also raised for the delivery costs.“Donegal be proud we will always be ready to give a helping hand to those who need it!,” said the collection team on Facebook. Two vans were driven to the capital this week to bring the donations to the volunteers at ‘Homeless Mobile Run’, who work directly with the homeless via soup kitchens in Dublin. Bags were distributed to the Inner City Helping Homeless and Feed Our Homeless charities.“We can’t believe their generosity,” said a spokesperson for Inner City Helping Homeless.Inner City Helping Homeless with the Donegal to Dublin Schoolbags for the Homeless. photo: Inner City Helping HomelessInner City Helping Homeless with the Donegal to Dublin Schoolbags for the Homeless. photo: Inner City Helping Homeless  Dublin homeless charities amazed by delivery from Donegal was last modified: November 22nd, 2019 by Rachel McLaughlinShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img read more

SO HOW MUCH DO YOU GET FINED WHEN YOU’VE PARKED ILLEGALLY AT THE CREDIT UNION SCHOOL QUIZ?

first_imgIF only some parents were as organised in their parking as the people who ran the Letterkenny Credit Union Schools Quiz tonight. For dozens of people abandoned their cars on double yellow lines outside the Mount Errigal Hotel in Letterkenny – to see their children compete in the annual schools event. This caused chaos in the Ballyraine area as other motorists struggled to get past the lines of parked cars. Dozens of parents ended up getting their details taken by Traffic Corps gardai. And it wasn’t as if they weren’t warned. The quizmaster inside gave out several warnings, including a ‘last chance’ 15-minute warning from gardai. Some parents did leave to move their cars – but most of those parked illegally didn’t bother. “Serves them right,” said one parent. “It’s not as if they weren’t warned. The big double yellow lines aren’t there for the craic.“I was delighted to see the Traffic Corps there sorting it all out. There was chaos for a while because of those few motorists who think they can park wherever they like.”Inside the hotel the atmosphere was electric as 75 teams from primary schools in Letterkenny and surrounding areas competed against each other.Among the brain-teasers were gems like “In which month do Australians celebrate Christmas?”And all the brains must be in Termon as Scoil Cholmcille National School won the top under-11s section. Kilmacrennan came second with Gaelscoil Adhamhnain in third. Termon tied with Kilmacrennan in the over 11s with Lurgybrack in third. It was a superbly run event from the organisers who also gave out a €10 voucher for all those who took part in the quiz to either start or add to a savings account at Letterkenny Credit Union.SO HOW MUCH DO YOU GET FINED WHEN YOU’VE PARKED ILLEGALLY AT THE CREDIT UNION SCHOOL QUIZ? was last modified: February 7th, 2012 by BrendaShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img read more
