The detainees who were arrested and kept in a Jodhpur prison following the Army operation to flush out militants from the Golden Temple in 1984 will finally get some relief with Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh scheduled to hand over compensation money to them today, a government spokesperson said on Wednesday. The Chief Minister will distribute cheques totalling ₹4.5 crore to 40 of the detainees here at a programme in the presence of all members of his Cabinet, the spokesperson said.Capt. Singh had recently written to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and also spoken to Union Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba on the matter. He had said if the Centre failed to pay its share of the compensation, then the State government will take over that liability too.300 people arrested Around 300 people were arrested and detained in the Jodhpur jail in June 1984 in the wake of Operation Blue Star, and were later released in three batches, between March 1989 and July 1991.Of these, 224 had appealed for compensation in the lower court, alleging wrongful detention and torture but they failed to get any relief from the court in 2011.However, 40 of the them went in appeal to the District and Sessions Court, Amritsar, and were awarded ₹4 lakh each as compensation with 6% interest (from the date of filing of the appeal to payment of compensation) in April last year.Appeal by CentreThe court had held the Union and the State governments jointly liable for payment of the compensation, and although the Punjab government had given an undertaking to the court to pay half the amount, the Centre had moved an appeal in the Punjab and Haryana High Court against the order, the spokesperson said.Earlier, the Chief Minister had also met the Jodhpur detainees and assured them of his government’s full support.Strong reaction The detainees had been suffering for the past several years for no fault of theirs, the Capt. Singh had said, while pointing out that the Centre’s decision to go in appeal against the compensation award had evoked a strong reaction among the Sikh community and was further likely to lead to a sense of alienation and perceived injustice among the community.

Chelsea centre-half Antonio Rudiger has stepped up his comeback from injury after completing the full 90 minutes in the Blues Under-23s’ win over Liverpool on Monday. In front of head coach Frank Lampard – who was watching on from the stands at Stamford Bridge – Germany international Rudiger made his first appearance since suffering a meniscus injury against Manchester United at Old Trafford in AprilHaving missed all of pre-season, Rudiger returned to full training at the start of August and came through unscathed as Chelsea’s development squad ran out 3-0 winners in Premier League 2 – with another senior squad member, Michy Batshuayi, scoring twice. Since 2014, the company has invested in around 60 ‘eco’ newbuildings, which have been delivered from China, Korea and Japan. They feature low fuel consumption and significantly reduced emissions compared with older ships. Most long-term time chartered ships are also ‘eco’ type ships.“Oldendorff Carriers is pleased to join the distinguished members of the SSI to share ideas and find a profitable and practical way forward on sustainability in the shipping industry. We found the SSI an excellent forum to address shipping specific sustainability issues, with like-minded companies,” Scott Jones, Director of Communications at Oldendorff, said.“Oldendorff is a great addition to the SSI, providing the perspective of a large bulk operator into the deliberations about sustainability and long-term thinking on the maritime industry,” Tom Holmer, General Manager of SSI, noted.“The sharing of ideas and best practice across different organisations is a critical part of our journey towards reducing greenhouse gases, developing new technology and becoming more transparent and accountable,” Holmer added.Last week, ship recycler Priya Blue, described as a pioneer in sustainable ship recycling in India, also joined SSI.Other members of SSI include ABN-Amro, AkzoNobel, Bunge, China Navigation, IMC Shipping, Lloyd’s Register, Louis Dreyfus, Maersk, Priya Blue, Rightship, Wartsila, Forum for the Future and WWF.
Washington DC: US regulators on Wednesday slapped a record 5 billion fine on Facebook for privacy violations in a settlement requiring the world’s biggest social network to “submit to new restrictions and a modified corporate structure.” The Federal Trade Commission said the penalty was the largest ever imposed on any company for violating consumers’ privacy and one of the largest penalties ever assessed by the US government for any violation. “Despite repeated promises to its billions of users worldwide that they could control how their personal information is shared, Facebook undermined consumers’ choices,” FTC Chairman Joe Simons said. Also Read – Thermal coal import may surpass 200 MT this fiscal”The magnitude of the 5 billion penalty and sweeping conduct relief are unprecedented in the history of the FTC. The relief is designed not only to punish future violations but, more importantly, to change Facebook’s entire privacy culture to decrease the likelihood of continued violations.” The agreement establishes an independent privacy committee within Facebook’s board of directors, “removing unfettered control by Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg over decisions affecting user privacy,” the FTC statement said. Two commissioners of the five-member FTC dissented in the settlement, saying the penalty was insufficient.
One of the great barriers to ending the global AIDS epidemic is still that of human compassion. While new HIV infection rates have dropped by up to 50% in many countries over the last two years, and 8 million people living with HIV around the world are now on life saving medical treatment, the HIV symptom we still struggle to overcome is shame.EJAF Twitter blood post – LOVE IS IN MY BLOODThis Valentine’s Day, the day of international love, Elton John and a host of singers, artists, writers and sportspeople including Jessie J, Florence Welch, Ben Drew, Ai Weiwei, Elizabeth Hurley, Paulo Coelho, George Takei, Kelly Osbourne, Lara Stone, Stephen Fry, David Walliams, Jamie Oliver and Shane Warne are showing their love by pricking their fingers, creating a spot of blood and tweeting the image accompanied by the words ‘Love Is In My Blood’.The campaign, which comes from Elton’s AIDS Foundation, is designed to create a global conversation; reminding the world that the fight against AIDS is winnable, but only if we have enough love and compassion to ensure that no one is shut out, left behind or made to feel ashamed.“Now more than ever we know how to beat AIDS,” comments John, whose AIDS Foundation marks its 20th anniversary this year. “Thanks to incredible work by the AIDS community over the past 20 years we now have affordable, quality treatment which saves lives and dramatically reduces the chances of passing on HIV. But these medicines don’t work against prejudice and discrimination. It’s time to stop treating people who are most vulnerable to HIV as outcasts. Everyone deserves the chance to protect themselves. Surely we have enough love for that.”“A little drop of blood, a huge wave of love and a great surge of generosity – let them lead to an end to HIV/AIDS around the world,” comments Stephen Fry.Artist Ai Weiwei has created a film commercial inspired by the campaign. “The work is about love, about a need for all to be concerned with life,” Weiwei says. “When Elton asked me to create something for the Foundation, I wanted to contribute by finding an expression that raises awareness for this crisis among as many people as possible.” A 30 sec and 60 sec version of Weiwei’s commercial – which features the words ‘Love is in OUR Blood’ over drops of blood and the sound of a heartbeat, will run simultaneously on Thursday 14 February on YouTube, and for 24 hours from the time people wake up on Valentine’s Day throughout the day until midnight on screens in Times Square, Piccadilly Circus and Independence Square in Kiev, Ukraine, which has the largest AIDS epidemic in Europe.“Of course we want people to protect themselves and everything we fund promotes safe sex, clean disposable needles and condom use” says David Furnish, Chairman of the Elton John AIDS Foundation. “The idea of this campaign is not to get everyone pricking their fingers, but to get the world’s attention; to challenge the equation that HIV + blood only equals fear and isolation. What pumps through our veins is also the love and compassion to keep one another safe AND look after people when they need it. The only question is whether we are ready to show it.”

The region is the world’s largest producer of both farmed fish and captured fish – accounting for 91 per cent and 48 per cent of total world production respectively – and improved management is required in order to secure the sector’s future, says the report, presented to the Asia-Pacific Fishery Commission last week in Chiang Mai, Thailand.FAO cites a study by the WorldFish Centre, an international resource organization belonging to the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research, which suggests that over the last 25 years the amount of fish available in some Asian-Pacific areas has declined by between 6 and 33 percent. In a few instances, the drop has been as steep as 40 percent over five years. Changes in the composition of fish resources have also occurred, FAO notes. The abundance of larger, more valuable species has declined, while the proportion of smaller fish lower down the food chain, sometimes referred to as “trash fish,” has notably increased – a phenomenon known as “fishing down the food chain.” Recent studies estimate that the amount of trash fish being landed now exceeds 60 per cent of the total marine production from the South China Sea, about 60 per cent of the catch in the Gulf of Thailand, 30 per cent to 80 percent in Viet Nam, and 50 per cent in trawl catches from western Malaysia. “Demand is fast outstripping supply and prices are expected to rise, resulting in greater incentives to target these fish and aggravate the over-fishing problem in the area,” FAO says.

Kevin Durant held back LeBron James.Miami’s LeBron James was not bad. He was good most of the game, in fact. But Kevin Durant was better, much better, all game long. The difference between the two superstar players helped Oklahoma City overcome a 13-point deficit in Game 1 of the NBA Finals to earn a 105-94 victory. The Thunder have a 1-0 series lead with Game 2 Thursday back in Oklahoma City. And it was Durant most responsible for OKC’s enviable position. He scored 17 of his 36 points in the final period on an dizzying array of shots. James had seven of his 30 when the game was decided. To wit: He had only one basket over the first 8:15 of the fourth.James averaged just three points in the fourth quarters of the Heat’s six-game loss to Dallas last year, taking almost all the heat for Miami’s Finals failure. He was good in this one, Durant was just better. And when fans chanted “MVP! MVP!” late in the game, they weren’t talking about James, the guy who won the regular-season award. They meant Durant, who is in a race with James for his first ring — and maybe the title of best player in the world is on the line, too.But first thing’s first. The game matters most, and James needs more help. Russell Westbrook shot just 10 of 24, but after halftime he and Durant outsored the entire Miami team 41-40. He finished with 27 points, eight rebounds 11 assists and just two turnovers. Meanwhile, Dwyane Wade had 19 points but shot just 7-of-19 for the Heat, while Shane Battier provided some rare offense by scoring 17 points, his high this postseason.Turning to a small lineup late in the third quarter, the Thunder improved to 9-0 at home in the postseason. Defensive ace Thabo Sefolosha helped defend James during the Thunder’s comeback, relieving Durant of the burden so he could focus on his scoring.A couple of key stats were significant. One, OKC outscored the Heat 24-4 on fastbreak points. Not good, especially considering how effective Miami has been on the break. The second stat is this: The Thunder scored 56 points in the paint. Really not good.

Star Wars collectors, proceed with caution: A lightsaber dubbed as an ‘original’ prop was recently pulled from a major auction over authenticity concerns. The lightsaber, which was expected to fetch up to $200,000 at a Los Angeles-based auction this week, was removed on Tuesday after Star Wars fans debated whether it was real or not, The Guardian reported.Profiles in History, the auction house selling the item, wrote that the lightsaber was one in five designed by Roger Christian, an award-winning Star Wars set decorator. A description of the item also indicated that it was used by Mark Hamill, the actor who played Luke Skywalker in the 1977 movie Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.Mark Hamill in ‘Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope’ (Photo Credit: Profiles in History)“In light of conflicting information regarding the origin of Roger Christian’s lightsaber, Profiles in History has decided to withdraw the piece from this auction until Mr. Christian can clear up the inconsistencies that have been brought to our attention,” said Joe Maddalena, the chief executive of the auction house, in a media statement obtained by Reuters.Despite Christian providing a letter of authenticity, Star Wars enthusiasts questioned if the lightsaber was really created for the film. Jason DeBord, editor-in-chief of The Original Prop Blog, studied Christian’s social media posts from 2015 and 2016. On his social media accounts, Christian allegedly discussed developing recent prototypes of the famous lightsaber.According to BBC, the Original Prop Blog posed videos raising concerns over the lightsaber, including alleged differences between the lightsaber picture in the letter and the lightsaber shown in the auction house’s catalogue.Last Week, Hamill also wrote a cautionary post on Twitter, warning fans that, “There was no ONE lightsaber I used in the films, but many, MANY, both for myself & my stunt-double.”Be Advised-There was no ONE lightsaber I used in the films, but many, MANY, both for myself & my stunt-double. It wasn’t a good debut match for Alex McLeish as he was in charge for the first time as Scotland new boss – and his side were beaten 1-0 at home by Costa Rica. However, Matt Ritchie believes that it’s just a beginning and the fans should be patient – it will take some time to rebuild the squad and the midfielder hopes that after that, the national team will be strong as never before. The Newcastle player spoke about this bitter loss as he said, according to BBC:“We need their support and hopefully we can have a successful spell.”Scotland needs a hero: Billy Dodds Manuel R. Medina – September 10, 2019 According to former striker, Billy Dodds his country needs a hero to inspire future generations as the team’s hope to qualify to the EURO 2020 is small.“It’s the first game and I understand they want to win, we want to win more than anyone, but it’s a work in progress.”“I know they are frustrated after the last campaign but we all need to be pulling in the same direction.”“It’s a new manager with new ideas and I think you could see from the first half to the second half it was much improved. Netflix has implemented unlimited maternity and paternity leave for its 2,019 members of staff during the first year after a child’s birth or adoption. The on-demand media streaming service has introduced the initiative in an attempt to combine the needs and aspirations of its employees and the business.Parents can return part-time, full-time, or return and then go back out as needed.Tawni Cranz, chief talent officer at Netflix, said: “We work hard to foster a freedom and responsibility culture that gives our employees context about our business and the freedom to make their own decisions along with the accompanying responsibility.“We want employees to have the flexibility and confidence to balance the needs of their growing families without worrying about work or finances.“Experience shows people perform better at work when they’re not worrying about home. This new policy, combined with our unlimited time off, allows employees to be supported during the changes in their lives and return to work more focused and dedicated.”
